Five Tigers make all-district team

Five members of the Rockdale Tiger baseball team received District 19-3A honors this past week. Zac Davis was voted to the first team as a pitcher and future Centenary College teammate Ryker Zinn also made the top team as an outfielder.

Jackson Perry made the second team as an infielder. Devon Whitsel and Tyler Caldwell were selected as honorable mentions.

Softball honors awarded to girls

Thorndale’s state finalist softball team had 10 members receive District 27-2A honors after picks were released this past week.

Riley White was named the most valuable player in the district and freshman Kelsey Kovar was selected as the Defensive MVP. Kovar’s classmate Emilee Baker was picked as Newcomer of the Year and Madison Kelm was named as the Catcher of the Year.

Maddie Flores and Hannah Laurence were first team selections and Kate Casey and Ash Kiesling made the second team. Jayci Martinka and Jacey Paulsen were honorable mentions.

MILANO – Six Milano High School softball players earned 2019 All-District 27-2A accolades. Senior Jenna Lewis was named pitcher of the year and senior Laynie Bastow was a first team selection. Senior Sterling Robertson and junior Kaitlyn Telg was named to the second team. Bethanie Compton, a junior, and Kenna Robertson, a freshman received honorable mention nods.

Academic All-District team members were Sterling Robertson, Karyme Santana, Telg and Mollie Ybarra.

Summer volleyball camp starts in July

Deadline to register athletes for the Rockdale Summer Volleyball Camp is July

1. The camp will be held July 29-31 at Rockdale High School gym. Camp for high school athletes is from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and for younger athletes 1-3 p.m.

Cost for incoming ninth through twelveth graders is $40 and for incoming fourth through eighth graders is $30.

Weight room open at Milano High School

Milano ISD will have their weight room open Monday through Thursday, from 9 to 10 a.m., during the month of June.

MHS coach Amanda Keen will also have a softball skills session from 10-11 a.m. every Tuesday at Becky Dent Field and Coach Lee Essman will have a basketball skills session at the Geneva Paceley.

All athletes from seventh through 12th grade are welcome. July dates and times have yet to be determined.

THS hosts sports camps in June

Thorndale ISD tennis and softball coaches will hold camps at the high school in June.

Tennis Coach Lisa Von Gonten will hold a camp at the Thorndale courts Monday, June 10 though Thursday, June 13.

Second through fifth graders will have their camp from 8-9 a.m., and grades six through eight will start at 9:05 a.m. until 10:05 a.m.

The camp will focus on hitting, ground strokes, serving and net play. Entry is $40 and for more information contact von Gonten at 512-430-7867.

Softball Coach Lance Betak will hold a camp at the THS softball field June 17-20.

Grades second through fifth will take the field from 9-10:30 a.m., and grades sixth through ninth will go from 10:30 a.m.-noon. The camp will emphasize fielding, throwing and hitting.

2019 Rockdale Open signups begin

Registration is underway for the 40th annual Rock-dale Open tennis tournament July 17-20 at the Veterans Memorial City Park.

The youth tournament is set for July 17-18 and the adult draw is July 19-20.

Entry fee for both divisions is $12 per person, with a limit of two events per person. Fees must accompany each entry and no entries will be placed into the draw until fees are received.

Galbreath hits hole-in-one

On Friday, Black Jack resident Billy Galbreath hit a hole-in-one on hole 10 at the Rockdale Country Club. According to witnesses Duane David, Bob Moore, Chris and Rickey Gerren, Galbreath drove the ball 148 yards with an eight iron.
