Lifters in striking

distance of regionals

After a three-week break from competition, Rockdale powerlifting teams head to the Salado Eagle Invitational today in the hopes of qualifying for regional competition.

“Salado is all about getting totals up for a push to regionals,” said Coach Jacob Campsey. “We currently have numerous lifters in contention and we need to try to get higher totals.”

Team members hope to join Mackenzie Musto in regional competition March 6-7 at Little River Academy, with their lifts in Salado.

Last season, RHS had three regional qualifiers Musto, Jeovanny Navarro and Nathan Jeter, who went on to state competition and placed 10th.

The team has nine lifters that are striking distance for regionals, according to Campsey.

“This year we really have a great team of girls lead by Musto, Jesenia Navarro, Whitley Boyd, Jenna Locklin and Haven Jimenez along with multiple promising young lifters,” he said. “As for the boys, Jeter leads the charge along with Navarro who are my two regional qualifier returnees along with multiple promising young lifters as well.”

The team is working on mastering lifting techniques.

“We have made a point to stay in the weight room and get strong and I think that has made an impact on the boys wanting to lift,” Campsey said about the boys’ teams. “As far as girls go, we had a few that were very interested and had success early in their careers and pulled some people in. Their success and the program has kind of built itself.”

Athletes will have another chance to compete on Feb. 22 at West or Hamilton meets. The boys only qualifier will be in Belton Feb. 27.

The girls regional meet is set for March 7 at Academy High School and the boys March 14 at West High School.

State will be March 20 in Waco for girls and March 28 in Abilene for the boys.
