RHS Powerlifters do well in Salado

Rockdale powerlifting teams did well in the Salado Eagle Invitational last Thursday, according to Coach Jacon Campsey.

Campsey took 2o lifters to the final tournament of the season and said first and second place finisher may qualify for regionals. They will join Mackenzie Musto in regional competition.

“The placing at these invitational meets has no bearing on regional ranking. It’s all about totals,” Campsey said. “In the coming days we will know which lifters qualified for regionals.”

The girls’ team results were: Jena Locklin, 2nd place in the 148-pound weight class with a squat of 290, bench press of 140, deadlift of 280 and total of 710. Haven Jimenez placed 3rd in the 181 weight class with lifts of 265, 140 and 260 for total of 665 with Lisbett Boussard close behind lifting 255, 135, 250 for a total of 640. Jesenia Navarro placed 5th in 114 weight class with lifts of 230, 105, 255 and a total of 590. Taytum Young and Whitley Boyd also competed.

The girls’ regional meet is set for March 6-7 at Academy High School.

The boys’ team results were: Nathan Jeter, 1sts place in 114 with lifts of 285, 165, 330 for a total of 780; Ty Mayberry 2nd place in 275 with 460, 315, 495 for a total of 1270; Jeovanny Navarro, 3rd place in 132 with 300, 220, 335 for a total of 855; Gavin Aguilar, 3rd place in 275 with 475, 325, 445 for a total of 1245; Aaron Avila 4th place in 275 with 575, 275, 390 for a total of 1240; Caden Young, 4th place in 132 with 320, 190, 320 for a total of 830 and Kevin Liu, 5th place in 132 with 285, 180, 315 for a total of 780.

Other Tigers competing were: 6th in 242 weight class, Alex Ellison with lifts of 410, 290, 395 and a total of 1095; 7th, 148, Bryce Flowers, 310, 210, 350, 870; 7th, 198, Chris Reyes, 400, 240, 405, 1045; 7th, 220, Daniel Gardinere, 335, 205, 370, 910; 8th, 220, William Davenport, 300, 190, 280, 770; 11th, Austin Goodman, 345, 185, 330, 860; 12th, 275, Miles Grear, 305, 170, 270, 745 and 13th, 165, Gabriel Goodman, 170, 140, 175, 485.

The boys will compete in regionals on March 14 at West High School.

State will be March 20 in Waco for girls and March 28 in Abilene for the boys.

RHS tennis teams play in Round Rock

Rockdale varsity tennis players Devon Whitsel and Yolianna Castillo made itto the consolation bracket of at the Westwood High School tournament in Round Rock last Friday. Whitsel competed in the consolation semifinals.

“I have them play in some more challenging tournaments so they can get practice playing tougher competitors in preparation for district and hopefully regionals/state,” said Coach Kristy Kaufmann.

Junior varsity played Tuesday at Madisonville High School and the varsity will take on Madisonville on Friday.

RHS baseball team has double header

The Tigers start the District 19-3A baseball season with at home against Lexington on March 10.

Results of their scrimmage against Thorndale on Tuesday were not available at press time.

The team will take on Milano at home in a double header scrimmage on Saturday beginning 1 p.m.

They will travel to Buffalo for a game Tuesday, March 3.

District 2A baseball starts in March

The District 27-2A baseball season begins mid-March.

Milano starts their district season on the road against Holland March 17. Junior varsity is set to play at 4:30 p.m. and varsity immediately following.

The Thorndale Bulldogs district opener beings at home against Rosebud-Lott with JV playing at 4:30 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.

Bulldog lifters head to regionals

Four powerlifters from Thorndale are going to regionals, according to Coach Scott Hawkins.

Makaelyn Vivas, Natalie Deary and Landri Martinka are regional qualifiers, while Layla Rodriguez is alternate regional qualifier. The rest of this year’s girls powerlifting team are: Zena Schlee, Emma Paxton, McKenzie Tallas and Vickie Sauceda.

THS boys will be in Belton on Thursday for their last chance to qualify.

Team members are: Jason Penick, Gabriel Ramthun, Mason Liles, Ridic Meraz, Mickai Mitchell and Tyler Huf.

Former RHS cager makes her mark

The redshirt freshman from Rockdale stole the show on senior day, hitting a career-high five three-pointers, including a half court heave to end the first half, on the way to a personal best 23 points.

“She played well,” Interim Head Coach Christopher Reay said. “We have known she is capable of that as well. It’s just a matter of her getting some confidence.”

She was a four year starter in Rockdale and averaged 13.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.6 steals per game. As a junior she was an All-Brazos Valley selection, as a sophomore she was a first team All-District.

The All-Brazos Valley and All-District team pick helped the 2015 Lady Tigers to the state championship game as a freshman.

She is the daughter of Pamela and James King.
