RHS powerlifters move up in ranks

Five Rockdale powerlifters competed on Thursday at the Salado Invitational with hopes to move up in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association rankings.

Robert Barrera won the 275-pound weight class and is in sixth in his division as of press time. Jeovanny Navarro placed third in the 132, increasing his total weight from 815 to 860. Navarro is ranked 14th in his class, two places away from a second straight trip to regionals, where he lifted in the 114.

For the girls, Tasha San Migel placed second in the 97 and Autumn Montelongo placed fourth in the 148. Both girls are ranked 12th in their respective divisions. Whitley Boyd was disqualified during the dead lift and sits at their 13th in the 165.

Other RHS lifters still ranked are Nathan Jeter, who is seventh in the 114, Jesenia Navarro, tied for sixth in the 105 and Mackenzie Musto, who is ranked fifth in the 132.

Nothing is official as results are still coming in from last chance qualifier meets throughout the week.

The Lady Tigers have regionals on Saturday, March 2 at Little River-Academy High School and the Tigers on Saturday, March 9, in West.

RHS track teams run in Caldwell tri-meet

Rockdale track and fields team got to compete for the first time this season at a practice meet in Caldwell where they competed against the Burleson County host and Hearne. The blue-and-gold kick off the season with the 61st annual Rockdale Relays with events going on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2.

Rockdale JV tennis schedule changed

The Rockdale junior varsity tennis team will play at the Liberty Hill Tournament on Wednesday instead of Thursday, due to anticipated bad weather. The varsity is still scheduled to play on Friday at the Round Rock-Westwood Tournament.

RJH basketball teams beat Eagles, Tuesday

Both Rockdale Junior High boy basketball teams ended their season with wins over Lexington on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

The eighth grade “A” team built an early lead and were ahead 17-6 at halftime. The Tigers held their lead and won 33-27, ending their junior high basketball careers on a good note.

Braden Thomas led with 16 points and Lane Rickman had eight. Chris Miles, Robert Owens, Cade Pantaleon and Ivan Bonner each had two. Chris Perez had one.

The seventh grade “A” team also got an early lead, up 10-2 at the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles made a comeback in the second half, getting within one point of Rockdale at the end of the third quarter.

The Tigers outscored Lexington in the fourth to hold on and win the final game of their season 27-24.

Gerren Marrero led the squad with nine points and Wyatt Windham had eight. Blaydn Barcak had four and Kemar Spencer, Isaiah Sauls and Mason Willard each had two.

Rockdale hosts playoff games at Tiger Gym

Over the past week, the Rockdale High School gymnasium hosted two high school basketball playoff games.

On Friday, the Liberty Hill Lady Panthers defeated the Navasota Lady Rattlers 52-47 in the area round of the UIL Class 4A girls basketball state playoffs.

On Tuesday evening, Snook defeated Holland 70-62 in the bi-district round of the UIL Class 2A boys basketball state playoffs.

THS football player makes all-state team

Thorndale senior Luke Leschber was named to the Texas Sportswriters Association’s All-State second team as a fullback. Leschber had 1,148 yards in the 2018 season and finished his career with 3,932 yards.

THS softball puts up 20 on Jarrell

The Thorndale Lady Bulldogs defeated Jarrell 20-2 on Monday night. The Lady Bulldogs also played in the Brenham Tournament over the weekend and went 4-2 with wins over Sweeny, Elkins, Salado and Columbia. THS plays at the Little River-Academy Tournament this weekend.

MHS softball falls to Rogers on Monday

The Milano Lady Eagles lost 10-0 to Rogers on Monday, the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s eighth ranked team in class 3A. MHS will face Rogers again on Thursday at the Caldwell Tournament. First pitch will be thrown at 9 a.m.

Milano golf teams place fifth in Caldwell

On Wednesday, both MHS golf teams placed fifthat the Caldwell Tournament.

Mackenzie Woolverton and Colby Doelitsch were the top golfers with Doelitsch placing 10th, according to head coach James Richardson.

Both squads play in their next tournament at the Shadow Glen Golf Club in Manor. The girls play on Monday and the boys play on Tuesday.

Registeration set for MISD golf tourney

The sixth annual academic scholarship golf tournament hosed by Milano ISD is set for April 13 at the Rock-dale Country Club.

All proceeds raised go toward scholarships for Milano High School seniors this May.

Over the past six years, the tournament has raised $63,000 in scholarships for students. Those interested in donating to or playing in the golf tournament can contact Sherry Lagrone or Stephanie Gage at 512-455-2533.
