Powerlifters amp

up for regionals

Eight Rockdale High School and six Thorndale High School powerlifters will represent their respective schools at the upcoming regional qualifiers meets next month.

Mackenzie Musto, Jesenia Navarro, Autumn Montelongo, Tasha San Migel and Whitley Boyd from RHS and Lauren Newton from THS will compete at the Region II Division 3 Meet at Little River-Academy High School on Saturday.

Robert Barrera, Nathan Jeter and Jeovanny Navarro will represent the Tigers and Corbin Preusse, Mason Liles, Ridic Meraz, Jacob Pedroza and Corey Brooks will represent the Bulldogs on March 9 in West.

Thursday at Taylor

The Rockdale High School tennis team had a run-in with bad weather for the third week in a row with the cancellation of their tournament at Round Rock-Westwood this past Friday. RHS will play on Thursday in Taylor at a tourney hosted by Granger High School.

Pflugerville Connally defeated College Station 55-47 in the boys Class 5A Region III basketball quarterfinal at Rockdale High School gym.

This is the third playoff game Rockdale coaches and administration have hosted this season.

Seven Thorndale Lady Bulldogs and eight Milano Lady Eagles were awarded District 25-2A honors this season.

For THS, Elise Biar and Madi Smith were both named most valuable player. First team all-district selections were Jordyn Smith, Savana Taylor and Sierra Winkler. Second team selections for Thorndale were Landry Laywell and Ashley Pesl.

For Milano, Sterling Robertson won Defensive MVP. Sophomore Hannah Batten was named to the first team and Faith Walton to the second team. Honorable mentions were McKenna Robertson and Kristian Taylor.

Academic All-District selections for MHS were Sterling, Batten, Ashlyn Johnson, Abby Miller and Karyme Santana.

THS softball opens district with victory

Thorndale opened District 25-2A play with a 2-1 win over Holland on Monday. The game came down Riley White’s RBI ground out in the ninth inning, giving the Lady Bulldogs the victory. White also held the Lady Hornets from scoring in the bottom of the ninth and had fourteen strikeouts in her first district win.

The Lady Bulldogs played in their first tournament last weekend. In their first game, THS beat Somerville 18-1 and were led by Riley White who had two hits and four runs batted in. The team scored seven runs in the third inning.

Hannah Laurence allowed two hits in seven innings pitching for Thorn-dale. Kate Casey also went three-for-four at the plate.

The Lady Bulldogs then defeated Georgetown East View 6-3. White led THS going four-for-four and striking out nine batters.

Thorndale lost their next game 9-7 to McGregor, the Lady Bulldogs gave up eight runs in the third, and despite having a six run inning in the fourth, the McGregor got the win.

They ended the tournament splitting two games with host Academy. They beat the Lady Bees 10-2 and lost the second one 5-3.

“It’s early in the season,” said Lance Betak, THS coach. “We are still moving players around and trying to see where all our pieces fit the best.”

The Lady Bulldogs play their this weekend at the Schulenburg Tournament. Scheduled games are 10 a.m. against Smithville and 4 p.m. against Wharton.

Bulldogs get stung

by Bumblebees 14-13

Thorndale lost 14-13 to Academy after trailing by six runs early in the game. Corbin Preusse and Mason Kuhl each led the Bulldogs with three hits. Kuhl also had five runs batted in.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs went 2-0 in a doubleheader with Rockdale and Round Top-Carmine at Tiger Field. The ‘Dawgs defeated the Tigers 11-7 after scoring six runs in the ninth inning. Later in the afternoon, they took down the Cubs 12-3.

THS plays next at the Hallettsville Sacred Heart tournament on Thursday.

Milano softball wins district opener 15-0

The Milano Lady Eagles won their District 25-2A opener on Tuesday afternoon, beating Bartlett 15-0. Jena Lewis led Milano from the circle with three strikeouts.

The Lady Eagles also played in their first tournament of the season this past weekend, going 2-2-1 in Caldwell.

In their opening game, the Lady Eagles fell 9-1 to Rogers, who they had lost 10-0 to three days prior. They tied Lexington at two in their next game.

On Friday, the went undefeated beating Class 4A Bellville 4-3 and Franklin 11-0.

On the final day of the tourney, the Lady Eagles lost 11-1 to Caldwell after the Lady Hornets got any early lead.

Milano plays in the Franklin Tournament this weekend starting Thursday.

MHS baseball falls to St. Joseph 17-7

The Eagles were scheduled to play in Somerville on Tuesday evening, but the game was canceled due to bad weather conditions affecting their field.

Last Thursday, Milano lost 17-7 to Bryan-St. Joseph in their first game of the season.

The Eagles play in their first tournament of the season starting Thursday.

The tourney is hosted by Burton and Round Top-Carmine.
