Rockdale Lady Tigers couldn’t overcome Academy in a 10-0 loss last Tuesday on the road. The state’s 11th-ranked team in Class 3A did a lot of scoring early and had pitching that RHS head coach Meghann Infantino described as the best pitching she’d seen all year.
“Going into Academy, we were just looking to string a few hits together and put a run on the board,” she said.
The Lady Bees started out hot with four runs in the opening inning and added another four during the second and third.
RHS was run-ruled in the fifth after Academy added another two runs.
Senior Mariana Casarez got Rockdale’s only hit with a double in the third inning.
Brande Breithaupt took the circle and struck out four while walking four.
Infantino said the bright side is that their defense looked good for the majority of the game and that they should be able to handle whatever pitching they face for the remainder of their district games.
THIS WEEK—The Lady Tigers had Tuesday open but return home against Rogers Friday.
The Lady Eagles are 10-3 this year and are 4-0 in district with a 22-6 home win over Caldwell, a 5-2 victory in Cameron, a 7-6 win over Lexington and a 16-0 blowout in Florence.
They are led by Nicole Mucha from the circle but also have relief pitcher Aaliyah Montalbo.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.
TIGERS—Like the girls, the Tigers also had trouble in Academy, falling 11-0.
Although the Bumblebees came into the game with a 5-10 record, it was hardly an accurate representation of how they played.
Academy’s pitcher Alex Hoffmann gave up only one hit to Cruz San Migel in the first inning. Rockdale strug-gled to score against the Bumblebees but didn’t have a problem putting the ball in play as Hoffman had just four strikeouts the entire game.
Drayton Castaneda pitched for the Blue-and-Gold, striking out three.
RHS coach John Hooser said that his team, which has five freshman starting, will “take their lumps” adapting to high school baseball especially with one of the most competitive districts in Class 3A.
The Tigers are 6-11 so far and 1-1 in district play after opening last Tuesday afternoon with a 4-2 victory over Florence.
THIS WEEK—They faced Academy again in Rockdale on Tuesday after press time and will host Rogers on Friday.
Currently unranked, the Eagles started off district on fire, run-ruling Lexington 10-0 in their opener last Tuesday and taking down Florence 21-5 at their place after a 13-run rampage during the fifth inning.
Game time for Rogers and RHS is scheduled at 7 p.m.
