RHS held its first ever virtual athletic banquet due to the rise of COVID-19 cases in Milam County. Coaches honored spring athletes through the RHS Facebook page last Wednesday.

“It’s been a spring of adversity. That’s the best way I can describe it,” said Jacob Campsey, RHS Athletic Director, in an introductory video. “From the deepest part of my heart I am so sorry to our athletes that they didn’t get to finish their season. Thank you for controlling what you could control.”

Campsey also thanked Rockdale ISD leadership and the community for their strength during these uncertain times.

“I promise you there is no place I’d rather be than Rockdale ISD after seeing our leadership team work during this COVID crisis,” Campsey said. “They truly care for all of our kids and it has been fun to watch. Thank you very much.”

Coaches from cheer squads, basketball, powerlifting, soccer, golf, track, tennis, baseball and softball teams merged together short videos in which they discussed the highlights of their season.

They also named individ-ual award winners for their sports such as Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, etc.

The most prestigious award presented at the banquet was the 2020 Outstanding Athlete of the Year.

For the boys, the award was given to two athletes Kesean Raven and Ross Loth. Campsey says both young men put in great time and effort for their teams and have amazing work ethics.

“You look at Kesean and you see he is a really superb athlete,” Campsey said. “Kesean is a great football guy and track guy. He’s an extremely hard worker and only knows how to go full speed.”

“Ross Loth is a multiple sport athlete and true competitor,” Campsey said. “Whether it was football, basketball, baseball or golf, he just went and competed in everything for us. We appreciate that greatly.”

For the girls, the award was given to Payton Miller.

“Payton played softball, basketball and volleyball for us and has been a tremendous leader through it all,” Campsey said. “She really helped set the standard and has been a great role model for the up-and-coming athletes.”
