Last week, Aubrie King was named head coach of the Mumford High School boys basketball team.
King, who started four seasons for the Mustangs, will replace Mike Scarborough. He led Mumford to the state tournament three times. A run the Mustangs capped by winning the 2014 Class A Division I state title with a 64-57 victory over Muenster to finish a 39-1 season.
“Don’t expect the same person that I was during my high school days,” King said. “I’ve matured and I’m professional now. I am ready to take the challenge head on.”
King said the kids can expect a different type of playing style and to compete at a high level.
“It’s going to be a lot of pace up and down the court, ” King said. “I expect for us to be competitive record wise and skillswise.”
K i n g played guard for the Mumford Mustangs from 2010-2014.
While there, he was named 1A Player of the Year twice. He was a fourtime all-state selection, four-time district MVP, three-time all-state tournament selection, fourtime all-Brazos Valley honoree and four-time allstate all-academic team.
As a team, the Mustangs went 115-3 in King’s last three years.
King went on to play in college at Saint Edwards University for two years before transferring to Mary-Hardin Baylor University in Belton.
“After college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do,” King said. “But I always played the game and it was something I was good at, so I figured I would end up being a coach.”
King was assistant coach at Flatonia High School for the past two years. Learning under former Mumford Head Coach Chris Sodek, who coached the Mustangs from 2001 to 2014.
King, who grew up in Milano, is the son of former Milano Head Basketball Coach Alvie King and Milano Athletic Director Wendy King.
