Earlier this week, 23 Thorndale High School football players earned District 13-2A-I honors including senior Coy Stutts, who was named the Offensive most valuable player.
Sophomore Noah Crabtree was one of two players to be selected as the 13-2A-I Co-Newcomer of the Year while junior Kaleb Yount was one of two players to win the district’s Co-Offensive Linemen of the Year award.
First team defense picks were Dylon Griswold, Luke Merz, Raymond Avalos, Hunter Thigpen, Aiden McRae, Stiles Patin and second team selections were Brenton Wilhite and Clason Beasley.
On offense, Jayden Clawson, Alvin Theis and Beasley earned first team honors and Tyler Turman, Patin and Merz were each pegged for the second team.
Honorable mentions were Nick Ramirez, Craig Lange, Kaden Kovar, Clawson, Avalos and McRae.
Academic all-district selections were Stutts, Merz, Patin, Griswold, Clawson, Thigpen, Crabtree, Kovar, McRae, Yount, Lange, Ramirez, Harrison Bender, Braden Pickel, Parker Williams, D.J. Spencer, Gunner Ferguson and Ryan Beardsley. The Bulldogs finished their 2022 season with a record of 9-3 and a district record of 5-1 overall. THS entered the playoffs as 13-2A-I’s second seed and battled back late in their opening round game to beat Johnson City 41-30. However, their year came to an early end when they encountered Ganado in round two. Although the Jackson County squad came into the post-season as the fourth place team from 15-2A-I, GHS shares a district with Refugio and Shiner, who have won every Class 2A-I state championship since 2015.
The Bulldogs are under the direction of Thorndale native John Kovar.
