This past week, Rock-dale student Ayden Reyes and Thorndale students Garrett and Ethan Schramm had the opportunity to learn back-to-past mixed doubles state champions Reyna Gonzalez and Devon Whitsel during the duo’s second annual summer tennis camp.
Last year’s camp had 15 campers but this year there were only three. Gonzalez said that smaller numbers did have plenty of upsides.
“Having a smaller group enabled us to give more attention to each camper,” she said. “We also got to do more drills.”
Gonzalez and Whitsel taught the campers basics of tennis but also focused on movement in tennis.
“They did a lot of drills where they worked on movement from side-to-side, forward with forehands and backhands and we worked on volleys and approach shots.”
She said seeing the kids gain appreciation for the game is what she enjoyed about the camp.
“I love seeing the kids getting excited about drills and wanting to hit after the sessions were over,” she said. “Getting to do this camp with Devon was something I also loved.
“He’s a great coach and he makes it so much easier for kids to visualize how to hit certain shots.”
