Thorndale High School athletes Corey Preusse, Hannah Laurence and Michael Herzog will compete at the UIL Class 2A track and field championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin on Saturday.

For Preusse and Laurence, this will be their final high school track meet. Thorndale head track coaches Bobby Sugg and Kalyn Paceley had many fond things to say about the multi-sport athletes.

“Corey’s been incredible,” Sugg said. “I remember when I told him in seventh grade that he looked like a thrower.

“And he’s been dominating ever since.”

This will be his third straight appearance at the state meet after finishing fifth in the discus and the shot put in 2018 and fourth in the discus in 2017.

Laurence will compete for the first time in the state meet in the 100-meter hurdles. She led the Lady Bulldog track team by qualifying in five events including the hurdles, triple jump, long jump, sprint relay and the 4x200-meter relay.

“A lot of 2A athletes play multiple sports,” Paceley said. “But Hannah was a middle-hitter on a state tournament volleyball team, an outfielder for a top-ranked softball team and she made it to track regionals in five events.

“And she qualified for all of them while splitting her time between softball and track.

Sophomore Michael Herzog will make his second trip to state after finishing fourth last in the triple jump his freshman year.

“It’s crazy what he can do,” said Scott Hawkins, THS athletic director. “He will probably pick what sport he wants to go to college in. That’s how good of an athlete he is.”

Preusse will compete in the discus at 10 a.m., and in the shot put 3 p.m. and Herzog is also scheduled to jump at 3 p.m.

Laurence is scheduled to race at 6:35 p.m.
