Regional playoffs start next week for both teams

The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Milano Lady Eagles for the second time this season to cinch the number two spot in District 25-2A play.

Going into Tuesday evenings’ matchup, Thorndale was one game ahead of the Lady Eagles and the 25-23, 26-24, 25-17 victory was enough to put them behind the Thrall Tigers (7-0) in the standings.

Last year, the Lady Bulldogs were co-district champions with the Tigers but lost to Thrall 3-2 in a district playoff match.

Milano put up a fight and gave Thorndale two close sets, before losing 25-17 in the final set.

Maddie Smith led the Lady Bulldog offense with 16 kills, while Landri Leschber had nine. Landry Laywell was also a key offense player for the second place Lady Bulldogs with 13 assists.

Elise Biar guarded the net with seven blocks in the game.

Milano was led by the Robertson sisters, McKenna had nine kills and her older sister, Sterling had eight. They were aided by Laynie Bastow with 13 assists, and seven digs. Abby Olson also had 13 assists.

The Lady Bulldogs wrapped up their season in Mumford against the Lady Mustangs. Thorndale defeated the home team 25-14, 16-25, 25-20, 25-12. Leschber led the Lady Bulldogs with nine kills, seven assists, and 10 digs. Smith took charge at the net with 15 kills. Biar also made an impact on the front line, having six kills. Laywell was the main passer with 14 assists.

The Lady Bulldogs will play Somerville in bidistrict finals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 30 in Giddings to decide which team will go to area playoffs.

Milano-The Lady Eagles defeated Bartlett in three sets last Tuesday 25-16, 25-10, 25-12 to finish third in district with a 10-4 record and 22-12 overall.

Olson led Milano in assists, having 16. The Robertson sisters controlled the net for the Lady Eagles, Sterling had 10 kills and McKenna had nine.

“We feel very proud to have made the playoffs,” said Wendy King, Milano High School athletic director and head volleyball coach. “The beginning of the season was rough at times, but we settled into permanent lineup and did well to earn a third place finish.”

They will play Snook in bidistrict with time and place to be announced.
