Thorndale Bulldog football started their season off hot Friday at home when they defeated Dawson 27-0 thanks to scoring three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter.
The other team began the game strong with a nine-play drive, but Thorndale was able to capitalize on penalties and get the ball back at their own 20-yard line.
After getting possession, Thorndale made it across the field in large part to a 54-yard catch-and-run by senior Stryker Leschber. Coy Stutts wound end the drive scoring his first of two touchdowns on a goal line run with 4:33 left in the opening quarter. Colton Merryman’s successful extra point made the score 7-0.
Although Thorndale didn’t score for the remainder of the half, the Bulldogs went on their scoring rampage when play resumed in the second half.
First, Raymond Avalos scored on a 13-yard run with 7:34 left before Stutts got his second TD on a 15-yard run a little more than two minutes later.
Avalos scored again on a two-yard run with 20 seconds left in the third.
With the Bulldogs holding their lead, they went on to win their season opener.
THS rushed for 212 yards with Avalos accounting for 78 of those on nine runs. Leschber was the top receiver with two receptions for a total of 67 yards.
Stutts finished the evening going 4-6 with 93 yards, throwing one interception.
SNOOK—This Friday, the Bulldogs stay at home where they will take on Snook, a Class 2A-II regional semi-finalist that has just four returning starters on defense, but has seven players returning on offense including quarterback Garrett Lero, who passed for 1,446 yards, rushed for 890 yards and scored a total 26 touchdowns in 2020.
The Blue Jays, who are picked by Texas Football to win District 13-2A-II and ranked 21st overall in the state, opened up their season last Friday with a 43-18 win over Class 4A Houston Kashmere.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
CHANGES—Last week, Thorndale Supt. Adam Ivy announced that all schools in District 12-2A-I will play their varsity district games on Thursday.
This decision stems from the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant throughout the entire world and due to the fact there is very little opportunity to make up district games because of the essential recovery time needed between contests.
