The Thorndale Bulldogs failed to break their winless streak this past Friday night in a close game at home against the Iola Bulldogs. The final score was Iola 38, Thorndale 31.
Bulldog quarterback junior Gunner Ferguson ran the ball 26 yards to score the first touchdown of the night. Senior kicker Daniel Monroy was good for the extra point and the Bulldogs took the lead early, 7-0.
Iola came back with their own rushing touchdown, then made the extra point and so still early ahead 7-7.
Bulldog quarterback Ferguson busted loose again for a 63-yard touchdown run but Thorndale failed to make the point after. This created a score of Thorndale 13, Iola 7.
Before the first quarter ended, Iola responded with another touchdown run and—after a successful two-point conversion— the score was Iola 14, Thorndale 13. Thorndale scored twice in the second quarter. Bulldog junior running back Noah Crabtree scored on a six-yard run and senior running back Aiden McRae ran five yards into the end zone. A two-point conversion and the point after kick failed but Thorndale took the lead, 25-14. Late in the first half Iola scored another rushing touchdown and they were successful with the two-point conversion, making the score at half Thorndale 25, Iola 22. Thorndale signal caller Ferguson rolled into the end zone again in the third quarter, rushing for 32 yards and scoring what would be the final Thorndale touchdown of the night. They failed on their two-point conversion attempt. The hometown team was still leading, Thorndale 31, Iola 22.
Iola came back once again, scoring on the ground and making the two-point conversion, putting the score at Thorndale 31, Iola 30.
Iola kept Thorndale scoreless in the fourth quarter and the last points of the night came on an Iola rushing touchdown. They made the two-point conversion and the final score was Iola 38, Thorndale 31.
Thorndale Athletic Director and Head Football Coach said his team continues to improve and move the ball well.
“We need to work on making plays, we need to execute on both sides of the ball. We will face a wellcoached, balanced, athletic team on Friday,” he said.
The entire offensive line, sophomore lineman Parker Williams and senior lineman Kaleb Yount were noted as having good games.
