Game stats on page 3B. HOLLAND—The Thorndale Bulldogs lost last week on the road against one of the top-ranked football teams in the state, the Holland Hornets. The Bulldogs were in this game to the end when a very-unlikethe- Bulldogs turnover was capitalized on by the Hornets and the final score was Holland 56, Thorndale 41.

The Hornets scored first in this district battle making the score 7-0 in the first quarter. The Bulldogs were however strong before the half ended, scoring three times in the second quarter. Junior Bulldog quarterback Gunner Ferguson connected with junior wide receiver Jayden Clawson for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Senior kicker Daniel Monroy made the extra point, making the score 7-7.

Holland then ran the ball into the end zone for six points. Their kick was good and the score was Holland 14, Thorndale 7.

Bulldog quarterback Ferguson threw another strike to favorite target Clawson for a 13-yard touchdown. Monroy’s extra point kick failed leaving the Bulldogs behind by a point, 14-13.

The Hornets would come back by running the ball into the end zone. They failed to make a two-point conversion but were still ahead, 20-13.

The Bulldogs scored before the half on a junior running back Noah Crabtree seven-yard dash into the end zone. Kicker Monroy was good on the extra point and the score going into the locker room was tied, 20-20.

It continued to be a game of tug of war going into the third quarter. Holland scored and then Thorndale scored on another Crabtree sprint from six yards out. The game was tied 27-27 after both teams made their extra points.

Holland then plowed their way into pay dirt and made their extra point kick putting them ahead temporarily in the fourth quarter 34-27.

The Bulldogs would pass two more times in the fourth quarter for touchdowns. Again the dynamic duo of Ferguson and Clawson made it look easy. These athletes combined for 149 passing yards on these two plays that scored 12 points and both of kicker Monroy’s extra points were good. Between these two Thorndale touchdowns Holland scored by running the ball into the end zone. The game was tied at 41 each.

The action would just not stop in this game and it was almost too much to watch. Something had to give and it did.

Thorndale would soon lose the handle of the football and the fumble proved to be too much to overcome, setting up the Hornets to eventually score two more times, one of these from the fumble recovery.

With an extra point kick and a two-point conversion the Holland Hornets won the game by 15 points. Really unbelievable. The fans must have been devastated. The final was a sad score of Holland 56, Thorndale 41.

Athletic Director and Head Football Coach John Kovar said, “These kids don’t quit. It’s been hard.”

He then shared about next week’s contest, “We plan on giving Thrall heck and we are looking to have more points on the scoreboard when this next game is over.”

He added, “Jayden Clawson and Gunner Ferguson had good games along with our offensive line, really our entire offense played well.”

THIS WEEK— The Bulldogs are now 0-8 for the year and 0-4 in district play. They play next at home against the Thrall Tigers. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
