After going through 30 applicants, Thorndale named Michael Williams as their new head basketball coach.

“Williams brings a ton of experience to the position,” Thorndale ISD Superintendent Adam Ivy said. “He is a great educator first and he knows what it takes to win.”

Williams has served as head coach of the Taylor High School boys basketball team for the last three years. The Ducks lost to Wharton 53-43 in the 4A area round of the playoffs this year. Taylor improved its record every year Williams coached.

In addition to his experience in Taylor, Williams served as the head basketball coach at Lexington High School for six years. He brought stability to the Eagles, who saw three coaches in three years.

“Thorndale has such a great history of success,” Williams said. “It’s one of the best coaching jobs in Central Texas and one of the best 2A teams in the state. I look forward to continuing the winning tradition.”

Thorndale, a perennial powerhouse in basketball, has made it to the state tournament three years in a row. Williams said he plans to continue the winning traditions.

“When I was at Lexington, I hated playing Thorndale because they used to beat us up,” Williams said. “I know the community is very active and supportive of their teams and I am happy to be a part of it.”

Williams said students can expect to work hard in every aspect of the game.

“I am going to coach them very hard and expect their best effort every day,” Williams said. “They are believe effort will be an used to winning so I don’t the legacy of the ones that issue at all. The kids know played before them, so they have to carry that torch now.”

Williams attended Hawkins High School from 2003-2007. During his tenure, the basketball team was ranked top five in the state and secured three district championships. He placed the basketball on the shelf after high school and ran track in college for Texas A&M Commerce. After completing college, he also accepted roles that allowed him to learn under the tutelage of a few Division I college coaches.
