SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS 2018

Both Thorndale and Milano broke out the whipping sticks as they each destroyed their first round opponents to kick off the Class 2A state softball playoffs.

No. 1 ranked Thorndale absolutely crushed Louise, 19-0, in five innings, while Milano flattened Flatonia 11-2.

Thorndale (23-2-1) now faces Snook in the area round Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Rockdale Softball Complex.

Milano (14-8-1) takes on No. 2 Normangee (25-4) in Franklin Thursday at 7 p.m.

The top ranked Lady Bulldogs were all over Louise, posting 19 runs on 14 hits in just four innings, led by Bailey White’s seven runs batted in and a pair of doubles on a 3-for-4 showing.

Jordyne Bigan also collected three hits and scored four times, while Madison Flores added two hits and two runs batted in.

Riley White brought home five runs with three hits (two doubles) and on the mound turned in a perfect game while fanning 11 batters.

Milano used 17 hits to leap out to a 5-0 lead after three innings as no less than four Lady Eagles racked up three hits apiece.

Sterling Robertson topped the hit list, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in including her second home run of the season.

Kaylie Poehl was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs batted in. Poehl is Milano’s top hitter on the season with a sparkling .533 average and 26 runs batted in.

Kaitlyn Telg was also 3-for-3, while Jenna Lewis went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.

Lewis (14-8-1) was brilliant on the mound, striking out 15 batters without walking a batter. In her last seven games, Lewis has fanned 96 batters including 31 in the past two outings. The junior righthander has 200 strikeouts on the season.

Normangee was the District 26-2A champion and outscored league opponents 184-18.

The Lady Panthers whipped Hardin 22-0 in the first round and are led by seniors Ashley Teran and Lexi Harris who have produced some stratospheric numbers.

Teran is hitting a lofty .716 on the season with 51 runs batted in. Harris hits .713 with 43 RBI and 72 stolen bases.

Shelby Snippa is Normangee’s top pitcher with a 13-2 mark. Teran also takes the mound and has a 7-1 record and a 0.17 earned run average.
