Three former Milam County basketball players were named to the 2010s All-Decade Team by the Bryan Eagle sports staff in July.

Wendell “Chuck” Mitchell Jr., Velma Mitchell and Aubrie King have all been selected to The Eagle’s 2010’s All-Decade Team. Mitchell Jr. and King garnered First Team All-Decade selections for boys’ basketball. While Velma Mitchell secured a selection to the First Team All-Decade for girls’ basketball. King, who played for Mumford High School, was raised in Milano before his father accepted an assistant coaching position at Mum-ford.

Wendell "Chuck” Mitchell Jr.—At Rockdale High School Mitchell put together an outstanding senior season averaging 29.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.2 steals per game. His play led the Tigers to the regional quarterfinals, their best finish since 1995. Mitchell Jr. was named First Team All-Brazos Valley twice and won three straight district MVP awards. He signed with Baylor but transferred to Trinity Valley Community College after his redshirt freshman season. He spent the last two seasons at Tex-at A&M, where he averaged 11.6 points per game.

Velma Mitchell— Mitchell lead Rockdale to its first state tournament appearance her senior season. She averaged 18 points, five rebounds, five steals, 4.5 assists and 1.2 blocks that season and she made the TGCA and TABC allstate teams. After her time with Rockdale, she was named an All-American at McLennan Community College and signed with North Texas.

The twins are the son and daughter of Wendall Mitchell Sr. and Sharee Mitchell of Rockdale.

Aubrie King—King earned the elite honor of being named Player of the Decade. During his time at Mumford High, he was a four-time TABC all-state selection and two-time Class A player of the year. King was the top option for a Mustang program that earned the best three-year run in the area this decade. He led Mumford to three straight state title games, ending with a state championship in 2014. As a senior, he led the nation with 169 three-pointers and averaged 21 points, nine rebounds, 7.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game. In his final three years with the program, the Mustangs went 115-3.

King played two years at St. Edward’s University before transferring to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, where he averaged 13.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He was a two-time American Southwest Conference Honorable Mention and holds the school record for free throw percentage at 96.7 percent. In two seasons, he set the school’s career record for 3-pointers made with 144. Today, King serves as the head coach for boys’ basketball at Mumford after spending two seasons as an assistant at Flatonia under his former coach, Chris Sodek.

King is the son of former Milano High School Basketball Coach Alvie King and current Milano Athletic Director Wendy King.
