Three Rockdale Junior High School Tiger football teams lost to the Burnet Bulldog teams on Thursday in Thorndale.
The eight grade A had a tough battle as they looked to fill the voids left by four injured players,” said Eric Willard, coach. “The Tigers caught the first big break, when Cade Pantaleon recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff.”
Aiden Hirt later recovered a fumbled punt return, but the team was unable to cash in on either turnover, he said.
The Bulldogs scored late in the first half to lead 8-0. The defensive battle continued in the second half. The Bulldogs scored six points in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for the Tigers.
“Scott Penny led the offense, completing passes to Davin Shriver and Hirt while scrambling for multiple first downs,” Willard said. “In the end, the Tigers fell 14-0, but came out with a positive outlook for the rest of the season.”
Offensive standouts were Chris Perez, Jose Aboytes, and Penny. Defensively the Tigers were led by Cade Pantaleon, Miguel Reyes and Jose Castillo, according to Willard.
RJH 7A - The 7A was hoping to continue its success from last week’s win over Robinson, but ran into a tough Bulldog team losing 28-0, said Willard.
Rockdale was able to march down the field on Wyatt Windham’s big runs on their first possession but the drive stalled. The Tigers had a good drive at the end of the first half, sparked by a 25-yard pass from Blaydn Barcak to Mason Willard.
Unable to reach the end zone, the half ended in the Bulldogs favor 28-0.
The defense came alive for the Tigers in the second half with interceptions from Gerren Marrero and Windham.
Defensive standouts were Chad David, Cruz San Migel, and Marrero. Offensive standouts were Dominique Clark, Zach Matthews and Windham, he said.
RJH 8/7B - In the first game of the evening, the combined B team fell behind early and couldn’t catch up to the Bulldogs losing 20-0.
“Quarterback Jonathan Sperry was able to keep the Tigers moving the ball, finding multiple receivers open all night,” Willard said. “He connected with Evan Miller four times for 30 yards, while also throwing the ball to Cayden Young three times for 20 yards.”
Defensively, Tyler Thomas came up with some big solo tackles, including a tackle for loss on fourth down.
Offensive standouts were Colton Ellis, Sperry and Miller. On defense, the Tigers were led by Colton Wallace, Lance Rickman and Miles Greer, he said.
The Tiger’s next game is 5 p.m., Thursday at Lago Vista.
