Last week, Thorndale High School tennis players Alex Innocencio and Torben Lerch barely missed out on the state tennis tournament, placing third at the Region IV meet in Corpus Christi.
The two swept teams from Port Aransas and Kaufer-Riviera before falling to eventual state qualifiers from Mason in their semi-final match.
Innocencio and Lerch weren’t immediately out of the picture for a trip to state, they then faced Thorndale’s other boys doubles team made up of Chance Betak and Dereck Cauble for a third place match and beat the pair, 3-6,7-5,6-4. As a result, Innocencio and Lerch had a chance to play for second against Mason’s other boys doubles team, but fell short 2-6, 3-6.
THS senior Maddox Rubio made it to the second round of the boys singles division while Chloe Grimm and Kaylee Beason lost their opening round matches in the girls singles division. Stryker Leschber and Saryn Peel competed in the mixed doubles division, falling in the first round.
