Going up against a team that Thorndale head coach John Kovar said hardly lost any of their players from their 2020 group, Thorndale’s offense built a good lead in the first half but it was the Bulldog defense that held a high-scoring Rosebud-Lott to one touchdown during Friday’s game in Falls County.
With both defenses starting off strong, THS didn’t get their first points until the final two minutes of the opening quarter when Maddox Rubio tackled Cougar quarterback Zane Zeinert in the end zone for a safety, giving THS a 2-0 lead at the close of the first.
The Bulldogs built on their small advantage early in the second quarter when senior Stryker Leschber scored on a goal-line run a little more than 20 seconds into the quarter. Colton Merryman’s successful PAT gave the visiting Bulldogs a 9-0 lead.
On their next possession, they expanded their advantage to 16 points when Aiden McRae ran in a seven-yard TD a little less than four minutes later.
In the second half, Leschber scored again on a 23-yard run with a little more than three minutes to go in the third quarter.
Breon Lewis scored Rosebud’s only touchdown of the game with 28 seconds to go on a 26-yard pass from Zeinert.
Stutts was Thorndale’s leading rusher with 85 yards on 19 carries and was 5 of 14 with 78 yards.
Chance Betak led the Bulldog receivers with two catches for 55 yards.
