Thorndale’s baseball season came to end with a 4-1 loss to top-ranked Big Sandy on Friday evening in Bryan.
“I’m extremely proud of our ball club. Not many people had high expectations of them outside of ourselves,” said Kelly Kuhl, Thorndale baseball coach. “We were picked to finish fourth in District 27-2A by the coaches and we were just a game away from winning it. We were ranked 13th in the state in last week’s coaches poll. I think that’s just a testament to how hard these guys worked and got after it.”
The Bulldogs 5-2 and 4-1 losses were the Wildcats most competitive games of the season. Big Sandy run-ruled all but one of their District 25-2A opponents.
“I think our kids competed well against Big Sandy. We just couldn’t get the timely hit and there were several turning points,” Kuhl said. “You have to give them credit. There’s a reason they’ve been ranked number one the entire season.”
In game one, Michael Herzog led the ‘Dawgs at the plate with two hits and Collin Taylor and Scott Guzman each had one. Taylor also threw six strikeouts and allowed four hits in five innings pitched. Justin Paxton pitched one inning and struck out one.
Big Sandy led during the entirety of game two. THS scored a run in the third.
This was the final game for seniors Scott Guzman, Corey Preusse, Nic Gerren, Kellen Hubnik, Mason Kuhl, Tyler Schillings, Collin Taylor, Justin Paxton and Will Terry.
“We’re losing nine seniors and I’d like to wish them the best in whatever they pursue,” Kuhl said. “But regarding next year, our young guys will pick up where we left off and reload.”
The Wildcats take on Mason in the UIL Class 2A regional semi-finals in Cameron at 7:30 p.m., Thursday. Game two will be played Saturday.
