Hey Tiger Nation, let me share a secret. You can’t spend a better evening than out at the high school baseball field watching Tiger baseball.
The weather is great, the burgers are cooked and ready for you and your family.
Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to have a playlist playing your favorite baseball songs over the PA system.
You have three former Tigers coaching and the product on the field is Blue & Gold quality.
If you want to do something fun without having to drive 60 miles this is it! Bring your lawn chair or sit in the bleachers but let’s go! —ka— Tiger Nation recently hosted the 66th annual Rockdale Relays.
If my math is right that means we launched this event in 1958. Dwight Eisenhower was president and Richard Nixon was vice president, remember him? A car cost about $1,500, a postage stamp cost 3 cents and Kat Mama could sell you a house back then for $7,000.
This was my fifth year helping as a volunteer and every time I’m there working I am impressed with what goes on. That old phrase, “It takes a village” is about hosting a track meet. This is a big deal that requires a large number of human resources.
I am convinced we should send our school athletic department to Washington. They could get the job done.
I talked to Athletic Director Hunter Hamrick about it not too long ago and he gave a lot of credit to former Athletic Director/ Head Football Coach Jeff Miller and Superintendent Dr. Denise Monzingo for how they built our current facilities that allow us to host large events efficiently.
There were 13 schools participating this year and over 800 athletes competed, including 75 Tigers.
Coach Hamrick was humble when he shared, “Former Coach Jeff Miller put in so much time in organizing this event, we just really work off of an old checklist. We have our meetings to make sure everything is covered and what our expectations are and it all happens.”
Like I said, that is a humble response, this is an “all hands on deck” event . Ever y coach, every coach’s wife (the heroes behind the heroes) is there helping. I saw coaches’ kids working like it was a paid gig, former coaches are serving, students are running time sheets, the concession stand is cooking (good job booster club), school administrators are out in full force, people are moving starting blocks, hurdles, blah, blah, blah.
Coach Sanders is up in the press box announcing with his radio voice, community volunteers are timing and keeping track of who was first, second, third, etc.
Special shout out to former Tiger and Tiger Coach David Monroe who’s tech skills were missed.
This event serves a lot of student athletes giving them a safe, quality track to run on, it shows off our facilities and is one of the premier track events in our region. If you see anyone connected to this event please give them a high five. —ka— “Sometimes the best team does not always win in the playoffs.”
That’s something I heard recently and it’s
I’m not a fan of the saying, “I’d rather be lucky than good.” But I understand that sometimes some people are more fortunate than those who are more talented.
There is no doubt Sabine Pass is a good team but maybe not really the better team on the court in their game against Thorndale. Time ran out on the Bulldogs, who looked like they were going all the way.
They f ini shed 30- 5 overall, they were regional quarter-finalists, 27AA District Champions, Thorndale Tournament Champions, Giddings Tournament Champions, 14-0 at home and they had a 18-game win streak. Say all of that in one breath!
Head Basketball Coach Michael Williams shared, “It’s always disappointing for your season to end earlier than you think it should, but if you look at our entire body of work this season, I think it was a successful one.”
“Last year we graduated players that were all-state and all-region, but we had players that stepped up this year and helped the team win 30 games despite playing a very tough schedule and winning no doubt the best district in our region,” he added.
Congratulations Bulldogs and congratulations Coach Williams and your staff on what was a great year!
