The Rockdale Tiger baseball team improved their record to 10-2-1 on Saturday after winning the Highway 79 Tournament.

The Tigers opened the tournament with a 15-3 win over Bremond.

Rockdale got an early lead, scoring one run in their first at bat after Zac Davis hit into a double play but scored a runner.

RHS added another four in the third, but put the game away with 10 runs in the sixth fueled by hits from Davis, J.J. Moreno, Ryker Zinn, Jose Young, Tyler Caldwell and Devon Whitsel. After shutting out the other Tigers in the bottom of the sixth, RHS took the game. Young got the win with two strikeouts and giving up only one earned run. The blue-and-gold also defeated Bremond the Saturday before in Anderson-Shiro 15-4.

Later in the day, the Tigers defeated the Caldwell junior varsity 9-2.

Rockdale got off to a fast start, scoring seven runs in the first inning led by hits from Davis, Bruce Mayfield and Whitsel, who led the team with two hits.

RHS held the Hornets, but struggled to hit the ball on the ground which prevented the Tigers from having another rally similar to the first inning.

Moreno led the boys from the mound, striking out six in 4.1 innings and having no hitter until he gave up a hit at the beginning of the fifth inning.

On Friday, the Tigers got revenge in a 4-1 over Thorn-dale, who gave the Tigers their first loss on Saturday, Feb. 23.

The Bulldogs got up in the first when Collin Taylor’s sacrifice fly scored a runner and put them up 1-0.

Rockdale took over in the fifth when Moreno singled to score in two runs and another in the inning.

RHS would score once more in the sixth and hold on to win the game.

Davis led the Tigers with seven strikeouts and allowing two hits over the course of six innings.

In their fourth game, Rockdale took down Snook 18-3 after three innings played.

The run-rule rampage was led by an 11-run hitting spree in the third. Zinn led Rockdale with four hits and Ross Loth led RHS from the mound with three strikeouts and allowed three hits over 2.1 innings.

In the championship game on Saturday, the Tigers defeated Hutto 6-2. Jackson Perry singled in a run in the first, putting Rockdale up 1-0.

Rockdale added to their lead in the third, with home runs by Perry and Whitsel.

The Tigers held their lead for the rest of the contest and were led by Zinn at the mound, who threw seven strikeouts and didn’t give up any hits in four innings. Moreno threw three innings in relief, striking out four and allowing three hits.

The Tigers resumed district play on Tuesday night with Little River-Academy after press time and face Troy on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
