Bocanegra, Delgadillo, Hernandez earn gold, silver and bronze to win as team; Lady Tiger team places third overall at meet

Both Rockdale cross country teams had stellar performances Saturday morning in Lexington, where the Tigers took gold and the Lady Tiger team left with bronze.

At the meet, which is named the “Small School Showdown,” Tiger runners Jesus Bocanegra (16:36), Yovanney Delgadillo (17:06) and Cristo Hernandez (17:56) were the top three finishers while Jose Tenorio (17:59) placed sixth and Aaron Montelongo (19:38) finished in 14th.

Austin Caldwell and Alex Cooper also competed with times of 19:43 and 20:47 respectfully.

For the girls, Lady Tiger junior Ciara Miles led the way with an eighth-place finish and a time of 14:17 to catapult her team into the top three.

Freshman Daniella Bocanegra also placed 12th with a time of 14:29.

Other runners that helped contribute to their score were Logan Smallwood (15:23), Lucy Grivas (15:35) and Aliana Ramos (15:51). Other runners for the girls varsity squad were Jadira Luna (15:56) and Hannya Ugalde (17:32).

JV— For the boys, Jesse Montelongo earned silver with a 20:49, while Wyatt Smith (22:06) placed fourth and Pedro Tenorio (22:26) finished sixth. Izabella Delgadillo led the way for the junior varsity Lady Tigers placing fourth with a time of 16:33.

THIS WEEK— After press time, Rockdale participated in a practice meet with Cameron in Milano on Wednesday.

“The kids will run half of the distance to keep their legs light,” RHS coach Cheryl Meuth said. “It will be more of a training day that we will all approach competitively.”

On Friday, they head to the Camp Tejas meet in Giddings. The varsity boys run at 9:30 a.m. Varsity girls begin after and junior varsity boys and girls will follow in that order.
