Rockdale’s boys’ basketball team opened the Lexington tourney with a bang, coming back in the second half to beat Giddings 56-46.

Although the Buffs were a week removed from the Class 4A-II football playoff, that didn’t stop them having a quick start, leading 18-4 at the close of the first1

Little by little, RHS cut their lead in two, trailing 34-27 at halftime.

The Tigers came out on fire in the second half taking a 46-38 lead at the close of the third before winning b 4 in the final quarter.

The remainder of the tournament proved to be tough for the Tigers, falling to Hempstead later in the day 69-49 and closing out the tournament on Friday with a 65-47 loss to Dime Box, the 24th-ranked team in Class 1A.

SCHULENBURG– On Tuesday, the Tigers took down a relentless Schulenburg team 68-61 on the newly resurfaced RHS Gymnasium.

RHS built an early lead, going up 20-10 at the close of the first, but the Shorthorns stayed close.

Schulenburg was able to cut Rockdale’s 12-point lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter into a three point game midway through thanks to two consecutive three pointers by Brett Janacek.

Despite the friction near the end, Rockdale held on with shots by Mekhi Crawford who finished the night with 16, and a key-three pointer by J.J. Moreno, who led the Blue-and-Gold with 22.

“This early in the season, we’re missing some shots that I think that will fall later on,” McNeil said. “But we have to develop those habits in practice.

“If we make some of those easier shots, it won’t put so much pressure on us late down the stretch. But overall, I’m proud of the kids effort.”

THIS WEEK–The Tigers traveled north of the Milam County border to face Rosebud-Lott on Tuesday evening after press time.

The Cougars are 4-2 with a 33-31 win over a Cameron Yoe team that was without football players, and victories over Groesbeck, Milano and Manor New Tech.

Rockdale hits the road for the second week to play in the Centerville Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

They will be back home this Tuesday to host Snook.

Tip-off is 7:15 p.m., in the RHS Gymnasium.

The Tigers begin district play on Friday, Jan. 3, in McGregor.
