Tiger running back Chris Vargas scored the game-winning touchdown in Thursday night’s junior varsity game against the Cameron Yoemen in Rockdale. With two seconds left on the clock, Tiger coaches called a timeout to assemble a play after three failed runs left the Tigers one yard short of the end zone, trailing 9-6.
“It was a good play call with misdirection in the backfield on short yardage” said Coach David Monroe.
The Tigers got behind early when the Yoemen scored in the first quarter, going up 6-0. Rockdale was unable to score against a tough defensive line.
“We turned the ball over early and Cameron was able to take over inside our own 20-yard line and they were able to score.” Monroe said. “Our team also struggled with inside pressure offensively.”
Despite not scoring early on, the blue and gold picked up momentum at the end of the first half when Bruce Mayfield made an interception that stopped a Cameron drive. During half time, Monroe stressed to his players to “only worry about us and win the second half.”
The Tigers tied the game up in the third quarter when Jose Young found Anthony Dansby open for a 15-yard pass. The two-point conversion failed, and the game stayed tied 6-6.
Cameron took the lead 9-6, on a field goal with 3:13 left in the game, but the Tigers made their way down the field, which led to Vargas’ touchdown to defeat the Yoemen 12-9.
“Our kids confidence grew as the game went on.” Monroe said. “We just kept fighting.”
Defensive standouts were Mayfield, Christian Briggs, Fernando Gonzales, Colby Monroe, and Keymani Hamilton. Offensive standouts were Vargas, Dansby, Young, Alex Ellison, and Hagen Land.
The Junior Varsity plays their final road game against Jarrell on Thursday with kickoff beginning at 6 p.m.
