FRANKLIN—Rockdale has a long-standing tradition in the mixed doubles division so there was much pressure on this year’s duo Devon Whitsel and Reyna Gonzalez.

They held up their end.

The Tigers are sending four players to the regional tournament on April 18-19 at A&M Consolidated.

The state tournament will be held May 17-18 at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M.

Whitsel and Gonzalez captured the mixed doubles championship, while Payton Miller and Eve King moved on after fi nishing second in district doubles.

The girls team tied for runner-up with Academy, while the boys were seventh in District 20-3A.

Rockdale was the defending champion in both the boys and girls division.

The No. 1 seeds, Whitsel and Gonzalez disposed of the team from Academy 6-2, 6-2 in the fi nals.

The duo opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 destruction of a team from Academy.

Whitsel and Gonzalez’ appearance in regional marks the 11th straight year that Rockdale has sent a mixed doubles team to the regional tournament.

Whitsel—a sophomore— and Gonzalez—a junior— are both former district singles champions.

Miller and King fell to the team from Academy 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in a hard fought loss.

Miller and King fought through the fi rst two rounds with wins over Franklin (6-2, 2-6, 7-6) and Cameron (6-4, 6-4).

Rockdale’s Stephanie Ceja and Autumn Montelongo were fourth after falling to the team from Franklin 6-2, 6-0.

In girls singles, the Tigers’ Kaylee Criswell lost 6-1, 6-0 for fourth place.
