On Friday night, two significant things happened for the Tiger soccer team. First, they avenged a February loss to Smithville by beating them 2-1 on their own field. Second, the win guaranteed Rockdale their second trip to the post-season in their fourth year of existence.

For head coach Gilberto Rodriguez, it’s an accomplishment in a district where every game was a fight and a team where half the roster had never played competitive soccer before this season.

Now they have the challenge of taking on Brookshire-Royal, a team that won District 20-4A with a 13-1 record. The Falcons haven’t lost a game since Jan. 22, and have won their last 12 games by a total of 83-1.

“Going into the playoffs, I feel like the boys can compete and put up a fight,” He said. “They are excited and they know it won’t be easy, but anything can happen, you know.”

Rodriguez is excited as well as happy about his team making it back to the post-season.

“Playing last Friday night felt different and watching the kids fight until the end felt more special.”

The Tigers face the Falcons on Saturday, March 27, at Giddings High School.

First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.

LAST WEEK—In the Tigers win over Smithville Hagen Land scored and Smithville also scored on their own goal after defense from Jesus Bocanegra.
