STATE BOUND

COLLEGE STATION—If their performance at the regional tournament is any indication of what lies ahead, the Class 3A bracket of the state tennis tournament should be more than a little concerned.

Rockdale’s Devon Whitsel and Reyna Gonzalez completely annihilated the opposition at the Class 3A, Region III tournament at A&M Consolidated High School Wednesday and Thursday to earn a trip to the UIL state tournament.

The state tennis tournament is scheduled for May 17-18 at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M.

The Tiger duo will play their first round match at 1:30 p.m. on May 17 and should they make it to the finals, that is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. on May 18.

The duo was untouchable in the regional tournament, dropping a single game, that coming in the second round.

The No. 2 seeded Tigers easily disposed of the Brazos team of Kennedy Jetelina and Kyle Nieman 6-0, 6-0 in the finals.

Whitsel and Gonzalez knocked off No. 3 seeded Cason Killingsworth and Leanna Walpole of Groesbeck, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifi nals.

Groesbeck is led by former Rockdale coach Dusty Loewe.

In the second round, Whitsel and Gonzalez whipped Travis Cook and Lauren Stolle of East Bernard 6-0, 6-1.

The Tiger team gave an indication of things to come when they dominated the Kirbyville team of Jesus Antonio and Reagan Dominy, 6-0, 6-0, in a first round match that barely took 30 minutes to complete.

The Rockdale girls doubles team of Payton Miller and Eve King was defeated 6-0, 6-3 by Grace Denny and Linda Gonzalez of Brazos in the first round.

Whitsel and Gonzalez—both former district singles champions—will be following in some big footsteps.

Blake King and Erin Blanchard made three consecutive trips to the state tournament and came away with two silver medals.
