2018 SCHEDULE
With the second district loss for the Rockdale Tigers, they enter the last two weeks of district play in a position different from where they were the week before.
“We’re still trying to control what we can control,” said Jeff Miller, Rockdale High School head coach and athletic director. “I talked to the team (Monday) and told them we’re in charge of our own destiny now, and third place is as good as we can fi nish.
“The mentality is we can pout about losing two in a row, or we can go out there and try to become a better football team, and get where we need to be by the first round of the playoffs.”
The Tigers take on Jarrell on Friday. The Cougars have five starters returning from last year’s team, and had an 18-game losing streak, until they beat Florence. They finished pre-district 2-2 and started district play with a 35-21 victory over Lago Vista on the road.
“I know that Jarrell had a super junior varsity group last year,” said Miller. “They kept a lot of players down last year on purpose so that they could develop together.
“Now they’re on varsity, and that group is really talented. They have a quarterback (Heron Rodriguez) who can really sling it, and receivers that can go,” he said. “They play really hard, and they’re a way better team than they were last year.”
Jarrell hit a rough patch against some of district 10-3A DI’s toughest competitors. They lost 45-2 to Troy and fell to Cameron 54-7 the following week. This past Friday, Jarrell got their third district loss to Little River-Academy 38-13.
“They beat Lago Vista, and some other good teams in non-district play,” said Miller. “They’re certainly as good as anybody we’re going to play.”
