In their first district contest, the Rockdale Tigers took down McGregor 11-3 at Tiger Field on Tuesday in 38-degree weather. RISD administrators decided to move the game from 6 p.m. to 5 due to low temperatures expected to drop as the night grew older.
“We didn’t look really sharp today,” said John Hooser, Rockdale High School head baseball coach. “We got have a little bit better production down towards the middle of our order.
“We left a lot of guys on base and had a chance to really put them away. We need to learn how to do that. Our pitching was outstanding. Ryker Zinn threw 72 or 73 pitches and did a great job. Javier Moreno came in right after him and did a really good job. But overall, we’re coming around and we’re going to be okay.”
The Tigers play next this weekend at a tournament co-hosted by Thrall and Thorndale with games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Thrall High School and Thorndale High School baseball fields. Game times and locations have yet to be determined.
“At the tourney,” Hooser said. “I definitely want to work on improving in two-out innings, getting better with guys in scoring position and using the middle of the field, hitting behind runners and we need to execute at the plate.
“We didn’t look good when we tried to play small ball and all the things I said, we’ll definitely work on tomorrow in practice and into the weekend for us next week.”
The Tigers play Little River-Academy on the road Tuesday over the spring break.
ANDERSON-SHIRO—This past weekend, Rockdale went 2-1-1 at the Anderson-Shiro tourney with wins over Bryan’s junior varsity and Bremond. The Tigers tied Buffalo 4-4 after beating them 9-7 last Tuesday and lost 8-3 to host Anderson-Shiro.
