The Rockdale Tigers went into spring break with a fourth place at the Buffalo Relays in Giddings Friday.
“I think overall, everybody performed pretty well,” said Lewis Edmondson, Rockdale High School boy’s head track coach.
The Tigers scored 81 points, fueled by the first place finishes of the sprint relay team of Cam’Ron Valdez, Kesean Raven, Levi Baggerly and Will Storey and the 4x200-meter relay team of Valdez, Raven, Qua’shawn Crawford and Storey, which each earned 20 points each for their top placings.
The sprint squad finished with a time of 43.34 and the four-by-two was clocked at 1:32.25.
Valdez also won the 300-meter hurdles with a 42.87, earning Rockdale another 10 points and Storey placed second in the 100-meter dash with a 10.52 for eight.
Other top performers in Giddings were Ty Mayberry, who placed second in the shot put with a 46-1. Jace Robinson and Quentin Hughes placed fourth and fifth in the 400-meter run with a 55.93 and a 56.56.
Crawford placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with 23.27 and Layne Rash placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 46 flat. Rash also competed in the 110-meter hurdles, placing sixth with a time of 18.09.
Brandon Hernandez and Jose Rivera competed in the discus, with Hernandez placing fifth with 115-0 and Rivera finishing eighth with a 104-6.
The boys won’t compete over the spring break but have practiced in the mornings from 10-12 p.m. beginning Monday at the new Tiger Stadium as they prepare for their next meet on Saturday, March 23, in Cuero.
According to Edmonson, the upcoming meet is supposed to be the toughest on their schedule.
“I had our schedule set and then their coach invited me to their meet saying their would be really good competition over there,” Edmon-son said. “So I asked Coach Miller if we could go all the way over there and he said ‘go ahead’.
“It’s supposed to be highly competitive with primarily 4A and 5A schools there. Our four-by-two will also get to face off with their team, who made the state meet last season.”
LADY TIGERS—The girls went into the break with top finishes from Ivanna Luna, who placed third in the mile with a time of 6:06 and a fifth place finish in the 800-meter running a 2:43.24.
Mackenzie Musto placed fourth in the quarter with a 66.18 and a 4x200-meter relay team made up of Jena Locklin, Arbranae Sessoms, K’Tacia Mayberry and Kiley Moore placed sixth crossing the finish line in 2:01.62.
Jesenia Navarro placed 10th in the quarter with a 71.43.
Sessoms and Mayberry also competed in the 100-meter dash, placing 13th and 17th respectively.
Musto placed 14th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.46.
The girls were without two-time regional qualifier Payton Miller, who was unable to compete in the 110-meter hurdles due to a quad strain and Anna Harmon was unable to compete in both hurdle events that day due to an injury as well.
In the field events, Andrea Salazar placed fourth in the shot put with a 31-0 3/4 and seventh in the discus with 79-3. Freshman Taytum Young placed third in the pole vault, making 7-6, the same height she made at the Rockdale Relays the Friday prior.
Like the boys, the Lady Tigers also have the week off from competition but will compete on Thursday, March 21, at Lexington.
