The RHS boys’ basketball season is set to unfold today and the guys are fired up about playing. With the team finishing with a record of 7-22 last season, the Tigers expect to turn things around and make a run towards a playoff spot. RHS Head Coach Marcus McNeil will be going into his second season at Rockdale. The Reporter sat down with Coach McNeil to discuss this year’s expectations.

“Our expectations are to get better each day with the hope of winning the district and making a run in the playoffs,” McNeil said. “We have the mentality of playing as a team, being conditioned, and fundamentally sound.”

McNeil explained how this year’s team will play as a strong unit and hold each other accountable for their actions.

“I believe our strength is that we play together. This will be tested when games start,” McNeil said. “The expectation is that we stick together and take personal responsibility for executing our jobs.”

McNeil says there will be some new faces on this year’s team and they will have to work hard and get up to speed as the season is set to begin.

“The major difference of this year’s team is youth. So, our weakness is experience right now,” McNeil said. “This means that we will have to learn from film to gain understanding of the game, with respect to execution.”

When asked about a breakout player, McNeil says he expects every player to be a vital part of this year’s team success.

“Each player on our team will have to step up,” McNeil said. “Everyone will play their respective roles within our system.”

The team will have some key players returning in All-District selections Anthony Dansby and Jace Robinson. However, McNeil noted that the team has not yet selected its leaders for this season.

“I have a few athletes in mind that I would like to take on a leadership role,” McNeil said. “The team has not yet voted for the captains for this season.”

McNeil said he expects this year’s season to have tough competition and the guys to be tested in each contest.

“I believe the district will be competitive,” McNeil said. “We’re prepared for every team to bring their best each game.”

The Tigers’ JV and Varsity teams will begin their season against the Milano Eagles today at 12:30 p.m.
