Tigers fall to seasoned Bellville, getting ready for first district game at home

A young Rockdale team found themselves immediately outmatched against Class 4A-II’s sixth-ranked team Bellville when Saint Medrano was surrounded by four Bellville defenders bringing him to the ground not too long after he caught the opening kick off.

Two minutes later, the Brahmas scored on an 84-yard punt return by Utah State commit mit Robert Briggs. This was just one of four touchdowns BHS scored before the close of the first quarter.

At halftime, Bellville led 46-0 before eventually winning 67-7.

The Tigers did have some highlights in the second half when junior Robert Owens scored on an 11-yard run with a little less than six minutes left in the game.

RHS head coach Jacob Campsey described his post-game conversation with his team on Friday to The Reporter and KRXT.

“The first thing I said is any time we come out and look like that, it’s one-hundred percent on me,” Campsey said. “There’s something I didn’t do during the week to get them ready to play. If they’re better than us or not, we didn’t play very hard at times, and that’s my fault.”

Campsey also implied they’re now moving their attention toward this week’s district opener with McGregor.

“We’re zero-and-zero and McGregor coming to town Friday is the most important thing we have,” he said. “There’s a great opportunity to learn from this (Bellville) game and carry on. We have to watch film and learn what we can and not dwell on it, but learn from it and get better.”

Top performers for the Tigers were Owens, who had five catches for 67 yards and another 60 yards on nine carries.

McGREGOR—Like the Tigers, their first district opponent McGregor has a lot of young players in the middle of their first varsity football season and finished up non-district with a record of 2-2.

Their most recent game was a 35-20 road victory over Clifton in a game that starting quarterback Chad Lorenz scored three of the teams five touchdowns and ran for 311 of the team’s 362 rushing yards.

MHS has also faced Hillsboro and Mart, who they both lost to in week one and two, but bounced back in week three with a 36-17 win over Jarrell.

Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
