The Tigers look to have their swagger back after dominating the Caldwell Hornets 55-26. They are now 4-3 overall and 2-1 in district play.
“I am really happy with the way we played, and particularly the way we continued to respond.” RHS Head Coach Jacob Campsey said. “Early on, we traded scores with Caldwell, but we continued to fight and do what we needed to do. I am really proud of the effort we played with.”
The Tigers would get on the board first as Kobe Mitchell ran for a two-yard touchdown. Caldwell would respond with Jace Aly scoring on an 11-yard touchdown run. Dontavien Johnson scored the two-point conversion for the Hornets.
Later in the quarter, Cam’ron Valdez would score his first touchdown of the night on a one-yard run. The Tigers led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Hornets came out firing with quarterback Ryan Roehling connecting with Jamar Hewitt on a 20-yard touchdown pass.
Valdez would respond with a six-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked. The Tigers would extend their lead with a one-yard touchdown run by Mitchell.
The Hornet offense would continue to make big plays as Roehling dialed-up a 16-yard touchdown pass to De’Autre Burns to keep the game close.
Towards the end of the quarter, Valdez would use his speed to burst through the Hornet defense for a 45-yard touchdown run. The Tigers led 34-20 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Tiger offense would continue to play at a high level. Mitchell would connect with Anthony Dansby on a 10-yard touchdown for the first score of the half.
Valdez continued his stellar performance as he burned the Hornets with a 43-yard touchdown run.
In the fourth quarter, Valdez would deliver the dagger blow with his fifth touchdown of the day on a 57-yard run.
Caldwell’s Nicolas Johnson would earn the last touchdown of the evening on a 14-yard run.
Friday night marked the Tiger’s best offensive performance of the season. Mitchell went 17 of 22 for 273 passing yards, 29 rushing yards and three total touchdowns. Valdez had his best performance of the season with 239 rushing yards and a career high five touchdowns. The Tiger receiving core proved to be a mismatch for the Hornet defensive backs. Dansby would snag eight catches for 100 yards and a touchdown while Kesean Raven caught six passes for 96 yards.
On defense, Cade Pantaleon led the Tigers with 14 tackles. Dansby also had a great showing with nine tackles and three pass breakups.
Even with the blowout win, Campsey says there is always room for the team to improve.
“We just need to continue to be efficient on offense and sure up our special teams play,” Camspey said. “Defensively, the name of the game is to get to the football. So, we will continue to hone our tackling skills.”
The Tigers now control their own destiny with a chance to win the district outright. After this week’s bye, the Tigers will face off against the Academy Bumblebees on Oct. 23 at home.
