In their first tournament of the 2018-19 season, the Rockdale Tigers learned valuable lessons, struggled against all class 4A teams and made the consolation round finals at the Lexington Tournament last weekend.
“I don’t think we played very well,” said Sean Coleman, Rockdale High School boy’s head basketball coach. “We have some things to work on that we need to get better at.
“It starts with me. I have to make sure I’m making myself clear on the things that I want us to get done.”
On the first day of the tournament, the Tigers lost to the Taylor Ducks 56-44.
Junior Mehki Crawford and Cayden McBride led Rockdale with 10 points apiece. Mason Monzingo was also instrumental on offense with eight points.
Rockdale bounced back with a 46-41 victory over Smithville with an early lead ahead of the other Tigers 12-4.
They were led by Kelan Evans, who had 29 points, including four three-pointers. Monzingo was also a key contributor with eight points for the second time on Thursday.
The Tigers lost 41-22 in the consolation final to La Grange, Saturday afternoon.
The Leopards outscored Rockdale 22-9 in the first half and held RHS to one basket in the final quarter of play.
Monzingo and Zac Davis led RHS in scoring with seven points. Davis also led the Tigers in rebounds with seven.
The 2-2 Tigers will play their next game against Brazos Thursday in their opening game of the Taylor High School Tournament. Tipoff will be at 1 p.m.
