Despite the many replacements on offense and defense RHS Head Football Coach Jeff Miller is tasked with finding, he was impressed with the way his team did in their-first scrimmage, outscoring the Groesbeck Goats 4-2 at Tiger Stadium this past Friday.
“I thought the effort was tremendous,” Miller said. “And that’s what we were looking for in this first scrimmage was if we were going to compete and play hard.
“You know, we’re not necessarily ready to compete against a program that’s as good as Groesbeck has been, but we were great on both sides of the ball.”
Junior quarterback Jace Robinson and the Tiger offense had a great night, according to Miller.
“On offense, we’re really balanced,” Miller said. “We have four or five receivers that are really solid and if our quarterback throws the way he did tonight we’re going to be successful.
“And of course, we have Cam’Ron (Valdez) who can explode at anytime. We have some work to do with the offensive linemen but we’ll get that done in time.”
Miller also complimented the Tiger defense, which had eight new faces in the practice game.
“I’m really pleased with are defense also,” Miller said. “We only have three starters back so that’s a new defense.
“For a lot of them, that was their first varsity action. I was really impressed with the execution and the effort.
Miller went on to say that he was feeling very positive after his team’s outing.
“Some first scrimmages, I’m very optimistic and sometimes I’m pretty frustrated,” Miller said. “But I couldn’t be more pleasedafter this one.
“We have a lot of work to do but we’re certainly in a good position.”
MEXIA –Rockdale plays in their final scrimmage of the season at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening against Mexia.
The Blackcats are picked last in District 8-4A Division II by Texas Football Magazine with two starters returning on their offense. “We have some work we have to do with the offensive line,” Miller said. “But we’re going to get that done.
“Scrimmages are so big because we need to evaluate so many people and we have a lot of positions still open. One more opportunity for some kids to separate themselves.”
