After one week of practicing, third-year head coach Jacob Campsey says his team has a lot of energy heading into their scrimmage with Jarrell on Friday, their first of the year.
“It’s been a great week,” Campsey said. “Our kids came in ready to go and they’re flying around.”
The Devine native and UMHB alum said that might be due to the fact that someof the kids didn’t get to work out as much during July, with campus being closed for a week and record heat canceling some of their off-season speed camps.
“We didn’t see them a whole lot in July, so I think they came in a little more eager and ready to get going,” Campsey added.
Going into their first scrimmage, the evening will have a different format than the standard 11-on-11 that fans typically get to see.
Similar to their secondscrimmage of the 2021 season, when they practiced with Mexia, this week will remind fans more of an NFL draft combine. Players from both teams will partake in line drills and receivers will have a chance to work on routes against the opposingteam’s defensive backs.
Last year’s scrimmage even had a workout for the kickers, where players from the other team screamed and yelled while they were attempting to make a field goal or an extra point to replicate the Friday night atmosphere.
Campsey said last year’s scrimmage was like a “typical Rockdale Tiger practice” and with less contact. Players are also less likely to get hurt.
Scrimmaging begins at5:30 p.m. for the junior varsity and 7 for the varsity. Fans wanting tickets will have to purchase them via “Ticket Spicket,” an app available for smart phone users.
2022—With a young team in 2021, the 2022 Tiger roster has a plethora of familiar faces. Junior Blaydn Barcak is starting his second season as quarterback for RHS with a receiver cast of three-year letterman Robert Owens and juniors Wyatt Windham and Gerren Marrero. Sophomore Timothy Grice, a medalist at the state track meet last May, and De’Andre Nunn, a freshman who was a top performer in all sports at RJH last school year, are both poised to make some noise for Rockdale this season. Kemar Spencer, a running back, will also have a huge role with RHS.
The Tiger defense is even more reputable with Cruz Migel, Isaiah Sauls, Riley Spears, Jose Aboytes and Chad David returning to the fold.
MEET THE TIGERS—Tiger Stadium hosted “Meet the Tigers” on Monday evening, which raised approximately $8,800 for the school’s athletic program. For more highlights from the night, see 6B.
SEASON—The Tigers also face Class 4A Robinson in their final scrimmage of the year, Thursday, Aug. 18.
Rockdale will hit the road for a second straightweek after that, then they head to Teague for theirseason opener on Friday, Aug. 26.
Rockdale junior Isaiah Sauls takes part in a drill during Monday night’s practice following ‘Meet the Tigers,’ which raised money for the district’s athletic program. Sauls was also mentioned byTexas Footballmagazine as one of the team’s defensive leaders along with Cruz San Migel.
