Coming off an 56-40 loss to the Franklin Lions on Tuesday, the RHS boys basketball team seeks revenge against their Milam County rival Cameron on Friday.

The Tigers half-court trap defense kept their first meeting with the Yoeman close, but it wasn’t enough for the victory at Yoe High gym. They lost to Cameron in January 43-39.

“It was a close game,” said Sean Coleman, Rockdale High School boy’s basketball coach. “But it was also a rivalry game where the energy in the gym just catapulted us to another level, and both teams played with so much intensity on that night.

“I thought we did a great job of handling pressure and dishing it out as well,” Coleman said. “Unfortunately, we had that stretch where Cameron got up by eight midway through the fourth and we had to fight back for the remainder of the game.”

RHS faces a third place Cameron squad in District 19-3A with a 7-5 record.

Rogers – Last Friday, the Tigers lost 51-42 to Rogers for the second time this season. The blue-and-gold went into half time with the black-and-gold trailing by two. The Tigers were set back in the third when the Eagles went on an 11-3 run.

“We gave that third quarter away,” Coleman said. “We missed eleven or twelve shots during that quarter and even with a comeback in the fourth, we couldn’t overcome that.

“It’s kind of been the story of the season. We’ll play really good for most of the game, but then we’ll have a stretch where we just don’t play well,” Coleman said. “We have to play the entire thirty-two minutes of the game from start to finish, because we’ve come so close in so many games. It’s those little things that end up being the difference between a win and a loss and I need to keep stressing that to the guys.”

Rockdale went on a 14-2 run with about five minutes left until the final 60 seconds, but saw their chances of a win fade when the Tigers missed two shots that would’ve cut the Rogers lead to four. Rogers scored six more points to Rockdale’s three to win 51-42. Kobe Mitchell was the leading scorer with 11 and J.J. Moreno had 10.

Troy – Earlier in the week, RHS defeated Troy 60-54. Kelan Evans scored 21 points and Mason Monzingo had 16. According to Coleman, Zac Davis also had a standout game despite taking an elbow to his left eye near the beginning of the game.

“He came back into the game and was a monster for us.” Coleman said. “He plays really hard and you have to love guys like that.”
