In what Tiger coach Chris Van Cleave described as a solid showing in their final tune up before the upcoming District 19-3A track meet, the Blue-and-Gold went head-to-head with rival Cameron, finishing second behind the Yoemen, 134-132, at the conclusion of Thrall’s Tiger Relays this past Thursday.
Rockdale started off the day strong with senior Gavin Aguilar winning gold in the shot put, Devon Hicks getting his second straight victory in the pole vault and Wyatt Windham picking up gold in the high jump.
During the running events, RHS freshman Timothy Grice earned his third and fourth gold medals of the season, with wins in the 100-meter dash and sprint relay with teammates Alec Silva, Robert Owens and Kobe Mitchell. A group made up of Grice, Owens, Silva and Tristan Galvan also earned gold in the 4x200-meter relay.
Other top runners for the Tigers were Gerren Marrero, who took home silver in the 110-meter hurdles and Yovanney Delgadillo, who picked up two second place finishes in the 3200-meter run and the mile. Jesus Bocanegra placed third in the mile and helped lead the mile relay team to a fourth-place finish not too long after his first four laps with Galvan, Owens and Amarion Butler. Cristo Hernandez placed fourth in both the 3200 and the mile, running the latter in under five minutes for the first time this season with a time of 4:52.13.
LADY TIGERS—The RHS girls track team finished fourth as a team with Julie Bartsch placing second in the shot put with a 33-7 while freshman T’Niyah Miles placed right behind her in third with a 32-4 1/2.
Taylor Delz placed fourth in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:06.32 and Ivanna Luna-Hernandez also placed fourth in the 3200 with a time of 13:59.41. Luna-Hernandez also placed fifth in the mile with a time of 6:23.55. Ciara Miles placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 55.79.
Both RHS track teams compete in the District 19-3A meet in Cameron on Wednesday after press time and Thursday, when running finals will take place. Finals begin at 6 p.m.
MILANO—Top performers for the Eagles were MHS junior Gael Alcala, who placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.05, and Bryson Richards, who won silver in the long jump with a 18-11 1/2.
Josh Millar placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.08 and sixth in the quarter with a time of 56.58. Oscar Hernandez also placed sixth, but in the discus with a 109-10.
For the Lady Eagles, Kadance Koenig won the most medals, earning a silver in the 800 with a time of 2:41.49 and placing third in the mile with a time of 5:55.79. Melanee Moccia placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 55.75 and Itzel Carrillo finished sixth in the 3200 with a time of 15:00.97.
THORNDALE—Clason Beasley won gold for the Bulldogs in the 200 with a time of 23.34 and placed fifth in the high jump with a 5-8. Stryker Leschber won silver in the shot put with a distance of 41-1. Teammates Kaleb Yount and Tyler Turman were right behind Leschber, placing third and fourth. Leschber also placed second in the discus. Jack Herzog earned silver in the pole vault and placed fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.05. 2021 state qualifier Branson McCoy also placed third in that race with a 11.53.
Freshman Jayden Clawson placed third in the long jump with a leap of 18-9 1/2 and fourth in the triple jump with a 40-11.
For the Lady Dogs, Landri Martinka was the top performer with bronze medals in the 200-meter dash and the quarter. Natalie Newton, Saryn Peel, Kyndal Robinson and Emilee Baker took fourth in the sprint relay. THS Juliette Demaio earned a fourth place finish in the discus with a toss of 84-2.
DISTRICT—Milano and Thorndale track teams both compete in Holland on Friday for their district meet. The 3200-meter run begins at 9:30 a.m., while field events begin thirty minutes later. Running prelims start at 2 p.m and finals begin at 5.
RJH—Rockdale Junior High’s eighth grade boys track team won six gold medals at their district meet, including four won by De’Andre Nunn. Nunn, who broke the school’s high jump record set by Blade Bassler in 1997 earlier this season, took home gold in the 200-meter dash, 300-meter hurdles, high jump and triple jump.
The Tiger distance crew also had a nice showing in their final middle school meet, with Austin Caldwell taking the top prize in the 2400-meter run with a time of 9:04.32 and Jesse Montelongo winning the mile with a 5:41.32.
For the seventh graders, Jameson Cox and D.J. Travis tied for first in the pole vault, reaching a height of 6-6.
