DISTRICT TRACK
CAMERON—There would be no defending of the district championship this time, but the Rockdale Tigers will be well represented at the area track meet anyway.
Rockdale, the defending champions, placed sixth at the District 20-3A track meet with 53 points, while host Cameron took first place honors with 152.5 points to second place Rogers’ 118.
Gavin Young and Tyler Lehmkuhl placed first in their respective events, the pole vault and the discus. Young soared 13-feet to capture his second consecutive district title.
Young, who was the first Rockdale pole vaulter to appear at the state meet since 1984 last year, had his career best of 14-feet at last year’s district meet. Young is chasing the school record of 14-6 which was set 43 years ago by Paul Joseph.
Young has reached 13-6 this year.
Lehmkuhl hurled the discus 148-11 to also win his second straight crown, besting his throw of 139-1 last year by almost 10 feet.
Will Storey was second in the 100-meter dash with a clocking of 10.84, Nathan Newlin was third in the 400-meter dash at 53.62, the 800-meter relay team (Dylan David, Gavin Young, Kelan Evans and Storey) finished third with a time of 1:34.05. David is the lone returnee off last year’s district champion quartet.
“Will Storey is picking up where he left off last season after a season ending hip injury,” said Rock-dale track coach Lewis Edmondson. “He has dropped some rather nice times this year and will compete with anybody in the 100 meters.
“Nathan Newlin is just a hard working competitor that does what it takes to be successful . He has worked hard this year and wants to give the area meet his very best.”
The 1,600-meter relay team (David, Young, Newlin, Evans) just missed out on area, placing fifth with a time of 3:41.53
“These guys give it all they have day in and day out and nothing will change in the area meet,” Edmondson said.
On the girls side, the Lady Tigers were seventh with 30 points as Academy defended its title and stormed to first place with 143 points ahead of Jarrell’s 108.
The Lady Tigers had no district champions, but had three girls finish second.
Brandi Caffey leapt 8-feet to finish second in the pole vault, an event she won in 2017. Caffey was also district champion in seventh and eighth grade.
Payton Miller also returns to the area meet after placing second in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 17.06. She was also second at the 2017 district meet.
Armoni Mack turned in a time of 1:04.57 for second place in the 400-meter dash. Mack was also fifth in the 200-meter dash.
Andrea Salazar will also make the trip to area after turning in a toss of 90-4 ¾ for fourth in the discus.
The top four finishers will compete at the Region III area meet April 19 in Whitney
