DISTRICT GOLF
COLLEGE STATION–The Rockdale golf rosters are filled with experienced ball strikers so it should come as no surprise to find them atop the leader board.
Both Tiger teams took their rightful place at or near the top in the first round of the District 20-3A tournament Monday at the Texas A&M Campus Course in the shadow of Kyle Field.
The second and final round of the district tournament will take place at the Wildflower Country Club in Temple on April 9.
The Tigers boys are aiming for their ninth straight league title, while the girls are looking to overtake Cameron for their third straight.
In 2017, both Rock-dale squads grabbed district titles, the third time in history that both sides had captured championships.
Both teams appeared at the state tournament with the girls pocketing a bronze medal.
The regional tournament will take place April 23-24 at Brenham Country Club.
“I feel like they have put in the time to get ready and practice the right way,” said Rockdale Coach Chris Joslin. “We have a bunch of good kids with great work ethic. Also, they all have the same goals and work together to try and achieve those.”
The boys secured a 14-stroke lead over Cameron (347-333) with Jarrell following in third at 405.
Veteran senior Walker Crane paved the way for the Tigers who had three golfers carded in the 80s on the 7,008-yard course.
Crane’s 80 topped the list, shadowed by Brady Nelson and Ross Loth who both penciled in an 81.
Crane trails Cameron’s Nikolas Keratsopoulos, who shot a one-under-par 71 and defending district champion Tim Handlos of Jarrell at 76.
Crane was the third medalist last year after firing in a 77 on the second day of play.
Brayden Burns was next up at 91 Monday as Gunner Miller had a 99, Doss Hasselbach 106 and McKade Casas 153.
Rockdale whipped the Yoemen by 43 strokes in 2017.
Sparked by state champion Lyndy Laurrell, the Rockdale girls team sits second with a 398 to Cameron’s 396.
Laurrell sparked Rock-dale with an 83 and the 2016 Class 3A state champion is tied for first place with Cameron’s Kagan Galvan.
The senior is the two-time district champion.
Eve King turned in a 102, Whitley Boyd 104, Trinady Joslin 109 and Gracey Burns 120.
The 398 posted by the Lady Tigers is 42 strokes better than their first round at last year’s tournament.
