The Rockdale High School sub varsity took the district title for the third consecutive year with its 36-36 tie against Little River-Academy on Thursday at home.
“We have been fortunate to have a group of competitive athletes that have the mentality to work hard and play with pride,” said Coach Brandon Gibbs. “They lean on each other and most importantly they find ways to win. I am very proud of the effort that this team gave all season regardless of the adversity they faced.”
The Tigers ended their season wiht a 4-0-2 District 10-3A record and 6-1-3 overall.
Sophomores Bryce Govan Miller, Fernando Gonzales, Chris Vargas, Hagen Land, Anthony Dansby and Jose Young led the team offensively, according to Gibbs.
Defensive standouts were Christian Briggs, Vargas and Creek Windham, who had an interception.
Gibbs, who is defensive coordinator for the Tigers, said the players have been exceptional.
“The thing that I am most proud of this season is that despite all the changes that were made, moving players to the varsity or to a new position, the kids never missed a beat or got discouraged,” he said. “They stepped up to the challenge and continued to play together as a team. This was a big reason for our success this season as well.”
