Mission accomplished. Weeks ago Rockdale Tiger Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Hunter Hamrick told us the goal was to, “Win games.”

That’s what Rockdale did on Friday night under the lights of Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers looked good dressed out in old school blue and gold. And their play was just as impressive as their uniforms.

They seemed more methodical and maybe not as fast as last year’s version but the final score of this game makes you wonder where we will be at the end of the season in a good way.

Oh the f inal score? Rockdale 42, Smithville 27.

The Tigers scored early in the first quarter on a Radyn Hamilton one-yard run. New sophomore kicker Fernando Pacheco then made the extra point making the score 7-0.

Smithville would return the favor and score but fail on the point after. This put Rockdale up by one, 7-6.

Rockdale running back Jeremiah Butler then took the ball into the end zone six yards and after Pacheco’s kick, the score was 14-6.

The Tigers were not done yet, still in the first quarter linebacker Reagan Jackson ran 46 yards after an interception that combined with Pacheco’s kick made the score 21-6.

The second quar ter was long with no score for either Tiger team.

Smit hv i l le however came out to play in the third quarter scoring twice compared to Rockdale’s one touchdown that came from a 30-yard pass from new sophomore quarterback Greyson Williams to junior wide receiver De’Andre Stephens. After another perfect kick by Pacheco, the home Tigers were up after three, 28-20.

We saw the defensive line make some big impressions in this game. Their pressure forced a fumble that was recovered and returned by Rockdale linebacker Zeke Castro early in the fourth quarter making the score 35-20.

It was in the fourth quarter after a little bit of sloppy play by the Tigers in the third that we saw the Tigers refocus.

Rockdale has some bigplay capacity under the leadership of first year starting quarterback Greyson Williams and it showed up and showed off towards the end of this ball game. Williams hit the athletic Stephens for a 72-yard reception that scored six. This gave the Rockdale Tiger fans some comfort with the score 42, 20.

Big Blue got a little loose again late in the fourth and allowed Smithville to score but the final score was 42-27 and this got the V lit up.

Way to go Tigers!
