The RHS boys golf team won their third straight district championship on Monday after finishing 19 strokes ahead of Cameron for a total of 716 on the second day of the District 19-3A tournament.

Brady Nelson took home first place with a total score of 79-82-161, beating out teammate Ross Loth who shot 79-84-163. Brayden Burns finished third for the Tigers with a 99-98-197. Doss Hasselbach shot a 91-107-198 and younger brother Jake Hasselbach shot a 98-105-203.

The Tigers played day two at Wildflower Country Club in Temple, which head coach Ethan Noel said was a much more difficult course compared to the Campus Course in College Station where they played day one of the tournament on Monday, April 1.

“I thought Wildflower was a much tougher course,” Noel said. “Over there you can find yourself in bad spots even after shooting a good shot.”

Of all 41 golfers that played in both spots the past two Mondays, only eight of them had a better score at Wildflower. Noel also said the heavy rainfall central Texas received this past weekend played a role early in the day but that the course dried up really well as the tournament went on.

Rockdale plays next at the Region III tournament at Brenham Country Club. The Tigers have played at BCC twice this season and fared pretty well finishing fourth out of 22 schools on Monday, Feb. 25, and third out of 22 schools on Saturday, March 23.

“Cameron will still be tough,” Noel said. “But I think Pollok Central will be the team to beat.”

Pollok Central won their fourth straight district title last week and faced RHS last year at regionals where the Tigers came back to beat them on day two after trailing by nine strokes after the first day. Rockdale also finished two places ahead of them at the UIL state golf tournament. Like the Tigers, the Bulldogs have three of their five golfers from last year’s state qualifying team.

The regional tournament begins on Monday, April 22, and concludes on Tuesday, April 23.

LADY TIGERS — The girls ended Monday in third place with a total score of 453-479-932 behind district champion McGregor 384-392-776 and runner-up Cameron 401-455-856.

Whitley Boyd qualified for regionals with a third place finish and a score of 99-99-198. Gracey Burns also qualified as an alternate with a total of 115-121-236. Payton Miller shot a 117-129-246 and Eve King shot a 122-130-252. Maddy Moody shot a 147-155-302.

This will be Boyd’s third straight trip to the regionals and first as an individual medalist. She will play in Brenham April 24-25.
