Rockdale Tiger basketball improved their record to 4-2 this weekend while at the Jewett-Leon tourney, where they finished third overall with wins over Normangee, Latexo and Broaddus.

Thursday was hot for the Blue-and-Gold, opening up tournament play with a 59-37 victory over Normangee and a 58-25 win over Latexo.

The next day, the Tigers ran into a then undefeated San Antonio Lutheran, who beat RHS 64-43.

RHS was able to bounce back with a 54-48 win over Broaddus in their final game Saturday. BHS led early but defensive stops from players like Chris Perez and Aiden Hirt helped put Rockdale back on track. They also shot 51 percent from the field which helped them outperform BHS, who shot 39 percent.

LAST WEEK—Two days before they went east, the Tigers found themselves trailing to Troy 39-34 going into the fourth quarter.

However, they were anything but defeated in the end as RHS outscored the Trojans 25-12 in the final quarter to win 59-51 over their old district foe.

Ivan Bonner led the team in scoring with 25 points while Perez had 11.

Chris Miles and Mason Willard each had 6 while Robert Owens had 5, Damian Cortez put up 4 and Hirt ended the evening with 2.

RHS head coach Marcus McNeil was happy after the game, but implied that his team prioritizes staying level-headed.

“I think that we can’t get caught up in the highs and lows of winning and losing.” McNeil told KRXT. “We have to firmly stick to what we believe in as a unit and let the chips fall where they may.”

“I’m excited about this group, we have a lot of upside and we have to continue to build on this,” he said.

THIS WEEK—Rockdale played host to neighbor Milano on Tuesday night after press time.

The Tigers play in another tourney this weekend, heading to Schulenburg.
