THORNDALE—Before last Tuesday’s matchup on the west side of Milam County, the Milano Eagles and the Thorndale Bulldogs were both 3-1 with recent losses to Hearne.
In a game with both student sections on their feet for much of the night. The three-point shooting of Thorndale’s Kaden Kovar and Blake Roberts couldn’t quite overcome the dominance of Milano senior Jayce Todd, who scored 29 points to help lead a relatively young Eagle team to a 47-42 victory against their Milam County rival.
This was the fourth consecutive time that the Eagles have defeated the Bulldogs since the 2020-2021 season.
Other scorers for the Eagles were starting point guard Gael Alcala, who overcame multiple injuries throughout the game to run the team’s offense and scored seven points. MHS sophomore Anthony Valadez scored six.
For the Bulldogs, Roberts was the team’s top scorer with 15, while Kovar had 12. Clason Beasley had eight.
MILANO— The Eagles also won on Friday, grabbing a win in Granger, 61-43. MHS returned home on Tuesday to take on Bartlett after press time and play next in a Friday home game with Holland at 7:30 p.m. They defeated the Bell County squad 44-40 without Todd on Monday, Jan. 2.
THORNDALE— On Friday, The Bulldogs bounced back from their loss to Milano with a 63-34 home win over rival Thrall.
The Milam County THS dominated from the beginning, outscoring the Tigers 21-6 in the first and doing the exact same thing in the final quarter to improve their district campaign to 4-2. The Bulldogs were off on Tuesday but resume their schedule on Friday, when they travel to Granger. Thorndale opened district play with a 62-36 victory over the Lions on Jan. 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
GIRLS— With hopes of avenging their 33-22 loss to Thorndale in December, the visiting Lady Eagles couldn’t quite overcome the Lady Dogs, who won last Tuesday’s showdown, 43-29.
The first half was ideal for Thorndale, who gradually built a double-digit lead and went into halftime leading, 23-11. Fortune favored Milano in the third, with shots from Kadance Koenig, Aalyiah McBrewer, Peyton Robertson and Montgomery Popham that cut the Thorndale lead to four toward the end of the quarter. With a few shots from senior Kyndal Robinson, the Lady Dogs led 31-25 at the end of the third.
However, the fourth was a different story, as Thorndale outscored the Lady Eagles 14-6 with points from Abby Dickerson, Kassidy Eubanks, Morgan Rabel and Tristyn Buchanan that gave THS a 43-29 victory.
Leading for the Lady Dogs were Buchanan, who had 14, Dickerson with 11. Robinson with nine. Milano’s top performers were Robertson, Popham and Koenig, who each had eight.
MILANO— MHS fell Friday in Granger, 36-31. As of press time, MHS is 3-5 and tied with the Lady Lions for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 27-2A. Milano beat GHS earlier this year, 42-20. The Lady Eagles faced Bartlett on Tuesday after press time and host Holland Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
THORNDALE— Following their win over Milano, the Lady Dogs fell to rival Thrall 43-27. As of press time, Thorndale has a record of 6-2 and has a 1/2 game lead over the Tigerettes for second place. If Thrall beats Granger Tuesday after the deadline of this week’s edition of The Reporter, the two teams will be tied for second going into their final four district games. Coach Bradley Dickerson and company return to action on Friday in Granger, whom they beat 43-25 earlier this month. Game time is 6:15 p.m.
