Even though rules restrict fan attendance for this year’s games, Rockdale ISD fans will still be able to watch their Tigers play this season.
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) will allow high school games in Texas to be televised and streamed on the Internet on Friday nights this season, officials announced Thursday.
UIL officials said the decision was made to promote social distancing and increased accessibility during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The UIL normally prohibits live telecasts of high school football games during the regular season, so not to affect local gate revenues, but an exception is being made for the 2020-2021 school year.
With the start dates at schools throughout Texas differing, sports programs have had to adjust their schedules due to the pandemic, especially since many districts are starting the year with remote learning only.
The home and visiting teams will each be able to have one webcast of the games, according to the UIL.
“I feel like the ruling has come at a great time,” RHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jacob Campsey said. “Our fan base is very supportive and I’m glad they will still be able to watch the games.”
Some of these guidelines include:
• The telecast should provide announcers who are competent and exhibit professionalism.
• No dramatization shall be made of any unsportsmanlike conduct, incidents or displays on the part of the participants or fans.
• There shall be no destructive criticism of officials’ decisions.
• No mention shall be made of injuries, unpreventable accidents, or other incidents which may cause any anxiety on the part of the viewers.
The rest of the guidelines can be found on uiltexas.org. RHS games will be available to watch online, and the procedure to watch the games will be announced at a later date.
