Last Friday, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) closed its building for operations in Austin due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We as a staff are working diligently to get our students back into competition,” UIL Director Charles Breithaupt said. “I also want to thank the students for being patient and continuing to prepare on their own.”

He said the staff will be available to answer any questions.

These modifications are based on schools resuming operations on Monday, May 4, according to the press release.

As the date approaches, UIL will monitor all available information and provide member schools with more specific guidance on district and post-season date adjustments related to this new extension, the press release stated.

RHS Athletic Director Jacob Campsey said student athletes are trying to stay busy during this suspension.

“The kids are tired of being at home,” Campsey said. “We’ve sent all of them some workouts with body weight exercises to keep them in shape until it’s time to compete again.”

“I just want to see the kids,” he said. “I miss being able to bring all of them together as one team and compete. The coaching staff has meetings on Zoom and we’re doing the best we can right now.”

MHS AD Wendy King said student athletes and coaching staff are in the same predicament.

“We are communicating with the kids via the internet,” she said. “They are sending screenshots and videos of themselves working out to our emails. They cannot come together to work out so that makes it tough.”

“My silver lining is that it seems as if this situation is creating a sense of community for a lot of people,” King said. “Neighbors are concerned about each other more than usual and people want to help people. That can never be a bad thing.”

The UIL director said he remains hopeful that state championships for all sports will be completed.
